Computer error at voting machine gives Bush 3,893 extra votes

Associated Press

COLUMBUS, Ohio - A computer error with a voting machine cartridge gave President Bush 3,893 extra votes in a Gahanna precinct.

Franklin County's unofficial results gave Bush 4,258 votes to Democratic challenger John Kerry's 260 votes in Precinct 1B. Records show only 638 voters cast ballots in that precinct.

Matthew Damschroder, director of the Franklin County Board of Elections, said Bush received 365 votes there. The other 13 voters who cast ballots either voted for other candidates or did not vote for president.

Damschroder said he received some calls Thursday from people who saw the error when reading the list of poll results on the election board's Web site.

He said the error would have been discovered when the official canvass for the election is performed later this month.

Damschroder said after Precinct 1B closed, a cartridge from one of three voting machines at the polling place generated a faulty number at a computerized reading station.

The reader also recorded zero votes in a county commissioner race.

Damschroder said the cartridge was retested Thursday and there were no problems. He couldn't explain why the computer reader malfunctioned.

Workers checked the cartridge against memory banks in the voting machine Thursday and each showed that 115 people voted for Bush on that machine. With the other machines, the total for Bush in the precinct added up to 365 votes.

Without Ohio, he'd only have 266 EVs.

On the other hand, I've heard reports that WI may still be won on absentee balots.

Thanks for the link.

So this isn't a chad issue, since it was electronic.

"At least Franklin County won't need to worry about punch card ballots. The county has about 3,000 electromechanical voting machines in use since 1992. The machines use a flashing red light next to each candidate or issue that stops flashing only after voters make their choice."

Yep, electronic... may explain how Kerry topped Gore's 2000 margin over Bush in Franklin County by 40,000 votes...

Chew on this for an anamoly - straight from BOE: I'm guessing 15,000 fraudulent votes in Lake County. Not even remotely possible that W got less votes than Voinivich and LaTourette. Not even.

Don't worry. The number is too small to make a difference. Unless they could find a systematic error in many places, and fixing the error could tips the balance, then not much they can do. Plus, OH is a Republican state, unlike NM where the Dems will try until 2007 to find the 'missing democrats votes' among Indian tribes.

well,, they can cry all they want, but, the provisional ballets, and the overseas ballets will just validate BUSH's win.
I like to see the final tallies in 3 weeks from all the counties in the USA. BUSH might just get 5 million popular votes over Kerry, when all of the overseas ballets are counted.

Even if this is an isolated incident, and there aren't enough similar machines to give Kerry the victory, I still want us to get rid of E-Voting. Now. Every vote should produce a paper ballot. Period.

You are so right, and this can't be said often enough.

I've been documenting this subject for years:

Click the picture & goto "last" for the latest on Vote Fraud:

...and while we can argue over details, there is an irreducible bottom line:

1- there needs to be an audit trial, on paper.

2- the voter needs to show ID- just like I do at my hometown bank, to cash my own check.

This error was noted earlier today on FR. The poster was advised to contact the Ohio authorities to correct the error. I suspect that someone from FR was "one of the people who called".

Cool! Can you imagine a DUmmie doing something similar? God the difference just yells at you.

In my experience, 99.99907% of all "computer error" is actually operator incompetence. ATMs are virtually error, idiot and tamper proof. Why can't voting machines be?
