Computer error at voting machine gives Bush 3,893 extra votes

Associated Press

COLUMBUS, Ohio - A computer error with a voting machine cartridge gave President Bush 3,893 extra votes in a Gahanna precinct.

Franklin County's unofficial results gave Bush 4,258 votes to Democratic challenger John Kerry's 260 votes in Precinct 1B. Records show only 638 voters cast ballots in that precinct.

Matthew Damschroder, director of the Franklin County Board of Elections, said Bush received 365 votes there. The other 13 voters who cast ballots either voted for other candidates or did not vote for president.

Damschroder said he received some calls Thursday from people who saw the error when reading the list of poll results on the election board's Web site.

He said the error would have been discovered when the official canvass for the election is performed later this month.

Damschroder said after Precinct 1B closed, a cartridge from one of three voting machines at the polling place generated a faulty number at a computerized reading station.

The reader also recorded zero votes in a county commissioner race.

Damschroder said the cartridge was retested Thursday and there were no problems. He couldn't explain why the computer reader malfunctioned.

Workers checked the cartridge against memory banks in the voting machine Thursday and each showed that 115 people voted for Bush on that machine. With the other machines, the total for Bush in the precinct added up to 365 votes.

Even the computers like George Bush better than John Kerry!!

John Kerry the Communist probably would have reduced their bytes down to nibbles, and before you knew it they wouldn't have even been worth two bits!!!

This error was noted earlier today on FR. The poster was advised to contact the Ohio authorities to correct the error. I suspect that someone from FR was "one of the people who called".

We are for the truth, not for error. That's what makes us different!

So what are the ramifications of this, if anything?

They are counting the provisionals, if they can verify them... and the military ballots will be counted next week I think

Here they go ambrose. Those sorelosermen will be scouring every hanging chad they can until doomsday. I hope I live to see the day they actually win an election again just to see how they crow about how smoothly the vote went! (not really!)

Even if this is an isolated incident, and there aren't enough similar machines to give Kerry the victory, I still want us to get rid of E-Voting. Now. Every vote should produce a paper ballot. Period.

Not much. Things like this are not uncommon, and are detected during the official canvass. Since there are small errors that will favor both sides, they tend to cancel each other out.

I'll bet they are looking for an additional 40 more machines that did the same thing. I'm sure Soros and company can find a way to provide these machines.

The RATS on the DU site are complaining that the election was stolen because these computer voting machines. This will add fuel to their fire. I hope that we don't move to technology that isn't proven. That would be a mess.

I wouldn't mind if they looked at more machines... Franklin County went for Kerry by a margin of 55% to 45%

In 2000, Franklin went to Gore over Bush by 1%

In 2000, they did not use E-Voting...

Probably why you won't hear anymore about this issue...

Voters at my poll were given the choice to use the paper ballot or electronic. The vast majority chose paper. Much simpler. I chose paper. All it took was a pencil and drawing a line to connect the dots.

That takes care of the first 3,893 votes, just 3.5 million to go and the election will be Kerry's, I am starting to sweat already.

The press will play this up, but the numbers won't change much, not with 130,000 vote lead.

After 6 weeks of squinting at chads, how far did Algore move his numbers, about 4 hundred votes.

Kerry's 10,000 lawyers know there's no trail to chase on this one, but that won't keep the press from reporting every computer issue. Back in 2000 this happened, and when the votes were being certified, Gore would pick up votes in one county, while Bush would pick up votes in another.

Hanging chads, and computer errors, don't only swing one way, but the press will never report the numbers that swing toward Bush.

... what amazes me, is that the provisional ballot number in Ohio keeps increasing, why is that?

Kerry took Franklin County by over 44,000 votes this year...

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1242878/posts
"In the 2000 election, Democrat Al Gore carried Franklin County with 48.8 percent of the vote, to George W. Bush's 47.8 percent. Gore's 4,156-vote victory margin was a slim 1 percent of the 414,074 total votes cast for president in Franklin County.

But Bush carried Ohio's 21 electoral votes on his way to being elected president by winning 50 percent of the statewide total, to Gore's 46.5 percent. "
