"Regrettably, we have seen an erosion in the Senate of centrists on both sides of the aisle," said Sen. Olympia J. Snowe of Maine, a Republican moderate whose leverage may drop substantially in the next Congress. She said she hoped Bush will push for cooperation between the two parties.
Another GOP moderate, Sen. Lincoln D. Chafee (R.I.), expressed even deeper disappointment, telling the Providence Journal he would not rule out switching to the Democratic Party.

Right just like Jumpin Jim - anyone heard from him since his switch - thought not.
Perhaps we could exchange this guy for Ben Nelson of Nebraska, who looks like a stalwart conservative comparing to Chafee, and who has not joined his colleagues in any of judicial fillibusters.
Like Father, Like Son. Except the dad was worse!
Does it make ANY sense to switch to the minority party?? It may make him more comfortable with his colleagues but as far as other perks of being a senator go, I would think you are much better off being in the majority.
Let me get this straight. Chaffee and Snowne are upset that the GOP picked up Senate seats?
Begone Rinosaur.
Fine, join the party of losers, see if we care.
I wouldn't mind him leaving if he has to moral value or core beliefs. I'm sure we could all work together and find a better Republican to take his place next time he's up for reelection. It would just make us work harder in RI. It could be a good thing for us.
Even if you're not in tune with the majority of the caucus, being in the majority and in line for chairmanships is way more fun than the alternative. Just ask Jumpin' Jim Jeffords.
That's a brilliant idea!! Look how well it served Jeffords. He could probably get at least two or three times the nothing Jeffords got.
Time to show RINO's the door.
The Governor of California should pull his head in, too.
I predict that he won't jump ship. This is just part of the post-election politicking and jockeying for position in the new GOP Senate caucus. Just like Specter dropping hints about how he might act as Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Since they are oh so pricipled and oh so independent-minded, perhaps they should resign their seats and run without a party affiliation.
I think you mean Nebraska's Senator Ben Nelson. With Zell Miller retiring, he'll be the last remaining conservative leaning Democrat.
Note that the media doesn't worry about the declining number of conservative Democrats, but the declining number of (ahem) moderate Republicans worries them greatly.
If they choose to stay a member of the majority party, then they can have some influence, but if they're determined to be with a bunch of punk losers like the 'rats (I used to be one), then I say let 'em go.
I've already heard that he's pulled that statement back....what a jerk!
Yeah, how did that whole Northeastern Dairy Compact work out for Mr. Jeffords?
sorry, Nelson didn't do anything to distance himself much from the "Bush lied" campaign of John Kerry, payback..payback.
besides he's up in 2006, we'll put a real Republican in that seat in Florida.
The RINOS always rattle their sabres like this after Bush brings it home for the R's. It's just for show - to try to remind the leadership that they really are relevant!
