Coming out tonight word that Tommy Thompson has said he will not return for term #2.
W cleaning house.
On that basis, Franks is my pick, though I think he and
Rumsfeld had difference it appears from reading his book.
The SecDef doesn't just 'win wars'. As a matter of fact, I don't think that's his job at all. I think it's up to the JCS to win wars, coordinating strategy through the various theater commands (Centcom, Northcom, etc.).
The SecDef is the guy that is responsible for making sure that the nation has the right forces and tools to do the job we are going to be called on to do.
Rummy has begun a massive overhaul of our forces, and how they are equipped. It was long overdue. I'd want someone in there that would see that plan through.
no, you're right. He wanted transportation but mineta got it. I think they wanted thompson for HHS because of his welfare reform experience.
The story is that Rummy is tuckered out. It's a tough job. Remember that Powell was Chairman of the Joint Chiefs under Bush, Sr. He put Schwarzkopf in charge of the first Iraq war, and won it decisively. Powell knows the military well, and is well respected by the military. He knows how to play roles too. It appears he was not as gung-ho about this Iraq war as Rummy was, but then in retrospect, it's not clear that Rummy's strategy was flawless.
He is not "cleaning" house!
Thompson and Ridge are mysteries.
Highly regarded yet neither able to deliver the electoral votes from their states.
Thompson is a likely future Senator. I don't remember...was Thompson a Rino?
Red Alert! Red Alert!
I think we have discovered Dan Rather's secret FReepName.
That's crap..Rummy wanyts to stay and finish Iraq. That, and to complete the "transformation" of the military..that's what he wants..He's a true patriot..will be recognized as perhaps the greatest SecDef ever..
Paging Tommy Franks....We have a job opening for you sir.
Thompson is a real conservative Republican. Wisconsin was in the crapper when he took office in 1986. He pioneered welfare reform, cut spending, and made WI a great state again. Great governor who should have stayed instead of letting his doofus Libertarian brother run and give the race to Bingo Doyle and his alcoholic AG.
No way. Rummy is staying. Powell is going.
Very accurate. Tommy is reported to hate living in D.C.
That is one reason why I doubt he will run against Kohl in 2006.
I'm not knocking Rummy. I think he's been great. On the other hand, the rumor is that he's told Bush he's quitting. He's worn out. I don't think Franks has the stuff to be Defense Secretary. He's a good general, but I don't know how good an administrator.
I'm just telling you what I heard. The rumor is that he wants out.
Powell won't be replacing Rummy. I've heard rumors that Col Powell has been ill. Nothing too serious, but wants to take it easy.
NO. A lot of GOP Governors copied his success.
If there is a chopping block, Mineta should have the first shot at it.
I wasn't arguing with you..but the DC rumor mill is going apeshit..Rummy is driven...I have no doubt he's tired..he's not a young guy, though he's in great shape for his age...but he's loyal to the troops..and he's just started to dig out all the institutionalized deadwood in the Penatgn..the Shiniskasvelis and others of that ilk...He wants to finish that job..
Powell is not a warrior - he's a statesman. I hope to Keep Rummy (or, perhaps, Tommy Franks).
Because of his call on ending the ground Gulf War in '100 hrs' because he was concerned about the international reaction to the 'Highway Of Death', Powell was culpable for the survival of Sadaam to 2003 and all of his deeds. I think he supported the Iraq war to make amends. But you are right, he is not a warrior. Nor is he a statesman. He's a good man, but I don't think there is a place for him in the second Bush administration. This will be a serious getting things done admin that will step on a lot of toes and that's not Powell's style.
Ashcroft and Ridge did fine jobs. Their leaving has nothing to do with cleaning house. Ashcroft only tok the job because he was asked, he was needed adn he was capable. Same with Ridge, however I've heard nothing definite concerning him leaving. Rumors about him leaving have been rampant since his appointment as Director of Homeland Security LOANG before the Dems allowed the Office of Homeland Security to be created.
56 posts and no mention of Giuliani as Attorney General? Could be a open door to 2008?
