Hello.
Over the past hour or so, there have been individuals who have hit abuse dozens upon dozens of times, sometimes for the very same thing they had previously hit abuse on.
Please do not do this. It is highly annoying.
I am aware that there are about 10 threads on Arafat dying. I made the decision that I was not going to pull all of them. I did not want to lose the first few comments made on them, and besides, the explosion of threads on FR when something big happens is somewhat of a tradition. I'll be pulling new threads, at least the new ones that do not have actual real articles associated, but the ones that were up will remain up.
If you don't agree with this policy, I am sorry and I did hear your complaints. If Jim wants the approach taken changed, he'll let us know. But one person hitting abuse 5 or 6 times on the same thread saying "duplicate, please pull" is just being a pest.
Also, about the CBS/not-dead thread. If CBS is reporting that, it is news regardless of if CBS has the story right or wrong. If they have it right, then it is news about Arafat. If they have it wrong, then it is news about CBS. Either way, I am not taking that thread down. Besides, it was a missed opportunity when the abuse report came in "He's dead." The correct abuse report should have been, "He's dead, Jim."
Thanks, AM
Pine, if you see twenty threads with the same title in breaking news, it is obvious that there are duplicates. When I see something like this, in an effort to assist the moderator and to help the discussion stay focused, I click on abuse and provide a link to the original thread or I state the reason that there is a problem with the thread. Posting more comments in the duplicate thread only bumps it up higher and continues the problem.
You are correct that it should not be about control freaks. The free in Free Republic also is about being responsible enough to search first to see if a thread on a topic already exists, being able to understand that one person's random thought does not constitute breaking news and understanding that duplicate threads affect the performance of the web site itself.
Regards,
Besides, it was already posted here.
Pine, funny, that is what some of us suggested with the fifty or so duplicate "Arafat is Dead" threads today.
And, I do thank the moderators to show that I appreciate their work, especially during times such as we have experienced this week.
Don't worry. I reported this "Admin Moderator" for abuse.
I love that photo. I have a picture in my cubicle of people with that expression when the NASDAQ crumbled in 2000. At least they had a good reason.
At the beginning of every thread there is a list of 'KEYWORDS' to which you may add. You can even add your own secret word if you wish to index something for yourself. The beauty of the internet is the ability to link, and so making individual pages irrelevant. Even if something is only on one thread it still may take up many pages, all of which must be clicked through (via links) to get to the next page. It makes no difference how pages are connected, it takes up no difference in the amount of space used on a server's space.
Another, often more efficient, way to search for valuable information is to use google's 'site' search. Why is this very often more efficient then just following a thread? Because of Freepers penchant for fun, irrelevancy, and ability to tie many different subjects to each other. We create a matrix of information here. Matrixes are not made with straight lines, but with many interconnections, achieved with the all mighty LINK.

Actually, I'll use the abuse button on my own post when a computer glitch causes it to show up 3 or 4 times. Last night, I used it because I had posted before proofreading and realized that my post had a huge glaring error. In each case, the moderator was very good about deleting my erroneous posts within a few minutes.
What I don't understand is that once, I received a post from a troll which was deleted from the public thread but visible on my personal comments page. Why wasn't it deleted everywhere?
What about a bunch of bunnies with waffles on their head? We need to be diverse, donchya know ;-)
*shrugs*
Usually comments to me from trolls are still visible even after teh tyroll is blasted to tiny quivering bits.
I think it has something to do with how comments are addressed to users and how the "my comments" page works.
I usually make a post to the admin in thread saying "PLEASE get rid of my duplicate post!"
usually they do, at other times they grin, chuckle, and leave it.
Especially if it's amusing as a double post..
*scratches head*
Sometimes they have a massively wicked sense of humor.
;-)
Please submit all abuse reports, in triplicate, to:

I've noticed that too, a lot of newbies think this is a "chat room"! It is not, it is NOT a stinkin BLOG! Too many vanities lately!! Now that's ABUSE. Think I should report it???
I was really tempted to hit abuse on the myriad (and sometimes highly doltish) vanities that popped up on News/Activism within the last few days, but I figured, ah well, the post-election excitement *is* pretty understandable.
Oh, is that what happens when you press the Abuse button? Always been afraid to push it, fearing nuclear winter type stuff to happen if I did.
We're not interested in your self abuse.
LOL!
I don't think I ever hit the abuse button twice for the same posting though.
Snarky IS cool.
"Besides, it was a missed opportunity when the abuse report came in "He's dead." The correct abuse report should have been, "He's dead, Jim."
The humor here is outstanding. I defy anyone to find similar corny-hambone-rismshot-punnish-word play humor anywhere on the net.
I defy anyone to find a website on the net that has moderators that PARTICIPATE in the humor and even instigate some of said humor.
Which reminds me.. I forgot to save my blue banner.
