Thomas: Double dose of 'W' a tough pill to swallow-Memphis Barf Alert
The Commercial Appeal ^ | November 4, 2004 | Wendi Thomas

"What comes next?" my mom would yell at my easily distracted brother when he was supposed to be getting ready for elementary school.

Somehow, between his bowl at the breakfast table and his toothbrush in the bathroom, he'd be waylaid by a book, a Lego, a piece of lint on the floor.

To keep him on track (and stiffen the back of anyone else listening), Mom would scream, "What comes next, Aaron? What comes next?"

On bad mornings she'd punctuate each word with handclaps, trying to get him to chart a straight course from Cheerios to Crest to clothes.

That was more than 20 years ago. Aaron, who graduated from Harvard Law School in 2002, eventually figured out what came next.

Wednesday, as I listened to Sen. John Kerry's concession speech, my mom's question rang in my ears.

What comes next?

For months, millions of Americans were hoping that today Laura Bush would be checking on the availability of U-Hauls, one way, to Texas.

Sadly, that was not to be.

For the 55 million voters -- myself included -- who didn't want four more years of President George Bush, what comes next?

From where I sit, it doesn't look good. I'm tempted to price a plane ticket to Toronto.

It's a safe bet that our "next" is hundreds more soldiers killed in an ill-advised war.

The national debt will creep further into the nosebleed range. Bush could appoint as many as four Supreme Court justices, conservatives who will butt into my bedroom and my womb.

We'll be stuck with a right-wing high court that will likely outlaw affirmative action efforts and chip away at other measures that mandate equal opportunity for all.

By the time Bush is done I could be on a plantation somewhere, picking cotton. (OK, maybe I exaggerate.)

Not even Kerry's optimism can shake my blues. In his concession speech the senator, gracious and dignified to the end, said that now is the time for America to begin healing.

But not even he can believe that in 48 hours we'll go from snarling and snatching campaign signs from yards to group hugs and a teary chorus of "Kumbaya."

In his acceptance speech Bush acknowledged the millions who wanted to send him packing. Somehow, with a straight face, he promised to try to earn our trust.

Why bother?

There's less incentive now for him to woo his opponents than when he weaseled his way into his first term.

Bush misled us about the reasons to go to war, stood by as civil liberties were eroded under the guise of a war on terror, crowed about catching Saddam as we watched Osama on CNN, smirked as our standing in the world sank to an all-time low -- and still won a second term.

Why trade arrogance and ignorance for humility and intelligence? Why flip-flop now? Why would Bush make America's "next" any different from his now?

He said in his speech Wednesday, "I see a great day coming for our country."

I do too -- when my "next" doesn't include Bush.

Now one of them actually admits to organized trespassing, vandalism, and mass theft.

Bush is coming to put every black person in chains and then into the cotton fields, Wendi. Yeah, that's your future, you ignorant bee-atch.

Geez. Endless supply of belly laughs from this lot of imbeciles.

This liberal chick would fare better in Toronto. And we would fare better if she moved there. Goodbye!

We'll be stuck with a right-wing high court that will likely outlaw affirmative action efforts and chip away at other measures that mandate equal opportunity for all.

By it's very definition, affirmative action is anything but equal opportunity for all. With howling errors like this, it is impossible to take anything written by this hysterical person seriously.

By the time Bush is done I could be on a plantation somewhere, picking cotton.

Perhaps it is a job you are well-qualified for; unlike, say, writing or punditry. Try taking stock of yourself before blaming everyone else.
