Iranians Express Rage in Rally Against Bush
Washington Post ^ | 11.04.04 | Staff Writer

President Bush may have triumphed at home, but he was burned in effigy here Wednesday. A noisy street demonstration marked the 25th anniversary of the student takeover of the U.S. Embassy, after which 52 Americans were held hostage for 444 days. Unlike past commemorations, this one appeared to be focused on the future and the potential for a major showdown with the United States during a second Bush term. Bush and not Jimmy Carter, who was president during the 1979-81 hostage drama, was at the center of the protest. Three massive photographs of the president served as a backdrop for speakers who criticized U.S. foreign policy. The subtext throughout the protest was the escalating dispute between the United States and Iran over Tehran's nuclear energy program. "Nuclear technology is our right, and we are not going to surrender our rights to the United States or Europe," vowed one of several banners waved by teenage schoolgirls in a crowd of thousands. The crowd gathered outside the sprawling former American compound that is a training center for Iraq's elite Revolutionary Guards military unit. The two-hour rally ended with a statement, read to roaring chants of "Allahu Akbar," or "God is great," that Iran would never give up its right to nuclear technology.

You only hear about the usual freaks on the news, but most of the youth over there do not want to be led by the ministers.

I agree. Iran needs to be handled carefully. Even the most reasonable kid will kick into 'patriotic mode' if his homeland is invaded or attacked. IMO the best course would be a CIA/Mossad effort to stir up a revolution.

In contrast, millions of Iranians celebrated President Bush's re-election...

Millions of Iranians expressed their satisfaction on the outcome of the US Presidential elections and George W. Bush's victory by calling and congratulating each other. Many were seen walking in the streets and shaking each others hands or showing a discret V sign. ...

"Improper translation. Allah is not God."

Not this crap again. Give it a rest. Allah is Arabic for God. Deal With it. Yes, in this case it's a different religion from Christianity.

"Allah" is a compound of Al-Lah meaning "The God". "Allahu Akhbar" does not mean "God is great" as a simple declaration of faith. It means "God is greatest!" as an 'in your face' about being superior to whatever and able to help them overcome you.

There was something posted yesterday about Iranians cheering for Bush's victory -- I think this must be a gov't-inspired counter-demonstration.

"The crowd gathered outside the sprawling former American compound that is a training center for Iraq's elite Revolutionary Guards military unit."

I thought it was standard procedure in the military to destroy assets that are in danger of falling into enemy hands. Don't we routinely send in a chopper to blast some damaged Bradley vehicle to smithereens before it can be captured and stripped by the enemy? So why have we permitted the U.S. embassy compound--which is still U.S. property as a matter of international law--to be turned into a training facility for Iran's military? Why hasn't some president before now sent a cruise missle to level our embassy?

Gia is "god" to a class of pagans. Doesn't mean that it is the Judeo-Christian "God"

Everyone has a different god. It just depends on how much difference you are prepared to tolerate between your concept of god [God] and his attributes and the next guy's view before you say they are incompatible.

Firstly, Ilah is the Arabic word for God. Allah is the name of God. Just wanted to clear that up.

Secondly, as much as it would be a lovely idea to see an end to the Iranian nut-jobs dreams of having Nukes with an all out attack on their facilities by either the U.S or Israel. Its really not going to be that simple (When is it? :D )

You see, recently the Iranians have purchased a quite high number of Russian-made 3M-82 Moskit anti-ship cruise missiles (NATO designation: SS-N-22 Sunburn.

The Sunburn can deliver a 200-kiloton nuclear payload, or: a 750-pound conventional warhead, within a range of 100 miles, and it travels at Mach 2.
The US Navy's only defense against the Sunburn missile is to detect its approach well ahead of time. For this purpose US AWACs radar planes assigned to each naval battle group are kept aloft on a rotating schedule. The planes "see" everything within two hundred miles of the fleet.

Trouble is the US navy operating in the Gulf faces a serious challenge that is unique to the coastal, environment. A glance at a map shows why: The Gulf is nothing but a large lake, with one narrow outlet, and most of its northern shore, i.e., Iran, consists of mountainous terrain that affords a commanding tactical advantage over ships operating in Gulf waters, should they have mobile launchers in those mountains things could get tricky.

Mind you they'd be even trickier if the Nut-jobs got nukes and tipped the Sunburns with them, they could hold all shipping in the gulf to ransom in that event.

Difficult times ahead I believe.

Not very fair and balanced on the part of WaPo =) Staged 'Arab Street' protests by the nuke happy mullahs with a single paragraph at the end about 'oil'? Please.

What of the majority of Iranians? Like us, they have no voice in the MSM because it doesn't fit with the agenda. Pathetic.
