The Republican expected to chair the Senate Judiciary Committee next year bluntly warned newly re-elected President Bush on Wednesday against putting forth Supreme Court nominees who would seek to overturn abortion rights or are otherwise too conservative to win confirmation.

Arlen Specter seems to overlook the fact the GOP is conservative AND pro-life and expects the President to nominate judges who reflect their values.

Folks we have got to STOP SPECTER from becoming the Judiciary Committee chairman. Otherwise we are sunk to ever get Supreme Court justices who will uphold the Constitution as written.

Here's what we all need to do

1) Everyone write your Republican senators - tell them to buck seniority and elect Jon Kyl (Arizona conservative) as the chairman. Remind them that people voting on "moral issues" delivered this election to the GOP!
2) Get the word out all over the blogosphere!

Here's a link to a good NRO article by Tim Carney - more proof that it's stupid for Republicans to support "moderates" under the guise that they're more electable...

Yes he IS presumptive.

Seems to me the mandate belongs with the people; not with some 'order' newly delivered to W by someone trying to 'talk tough.'

Vanquish him.

John Cornyn (the Good Senator from Texas) says he will sit Specter down and go over the issues with him. That ought to fix things. (But, I want Hatch and Spector out of any powerful Chairs or Committees. They're nothing but modern-day cannibals - along with Kay Bailey Hutchison, also of Texas - due to their advocacy of embryonic stem cell destruction.

Time for Specter to be reassigned to the "Senate Select Committee on Excess Bovine Flatulence".

Arlen Specter seems to overlook the fact the GOP is conservative AND pro-life and expects the President to nominate judges who reflect their values.

He also overlooks the fact that it was the GOP conservative base that won the election for GW -- not a useless Spincter campaign in PA. Piss on him and move on.

Could you start a fresh thread entitled "CONTACT FRIST AND TELL HIM TO KICK SPECTER OFF THE SENATE JUDICIAL COMMITTE! and then post the contact info?

Might have more traction then. I didn't give $$ to help get the President reelected and spend 14 hours working at the polls yesterday to see this issue die because of a RINO.

Make a new requirement that members of the Judiciary Committee can not have ever been involved in phony commissions chaired by Earl Warren. And pass a rule against ugly noses too.

Specter better shut his big fat mouth. There's nothing that says he has to have that position. The Senate Majority leader could decide someone else would be better in the Chair of the Judiciary Committee. The President needs to call old Arlen and teach him how cows eat cabbage!

Frist makes committee assignments... I suggest writing to Frist and suggesting that Spector be assigned to the Underwater Basketweaving Committee, and nothing else.

That is an EXCELLENT suggestion about writing to Bill Frist.

With comments like this, I almost wish he had lost...maybe contacting Senator McConnell is an order and asking he not be seated as the committee chair.

"A self-proclaimed moderate, he helped kill President Reagan's nomination of Robert Bork to the Supreme Court and of Jeff Sessions to a federal judgeship.

A former district attorney, Specter also bemoaned what he called the lack of any current justices comparable to legal heavyweights like Oliver Wendell Holmes, Louis Brandeis, Benjamin Cardozo and Thurgood Marshall, "who were giants of the Supreme Court."

'With all due respect to the (current) U.S. Supreme Court, we don't have one,' he said."

Need anything else be said? We need this guy in our cross-hairs vis a vis this chairmanship.
