Useful Utility for Viewing HTML Source(Vanity)

For anyone who is interested, here's a useful (free) utility from Microsoft that integrates with IE5+. When you select text/images on a web page (as though you were going to edit/copy them) then right-click, you'll have a 'View Partial Source' option in the popup context menu. Choosing this option will show you the HTML source in notepad.

I've used this for a couple years and it's VERY useful for determining the URLs of pictures you might want to link & also for answering 'how'd they do that?' if you see interesting stuff on a page.

Again, free. Very fast download.

Also a very easy way to see how the source code was written and also see if there any any 'hidden' pages. (such as trackers).

Even better than that is the Web Developer Toolbar for Firefox. It will open source in a new window and also the stylesheet. Plus it allows you to size your window to specific sizes, will outline divs (useful when you have a nesting problem), identify blocks, validate HTML, and more.

It says it will work only with IE 5, but it will work with IE 6, too.

If you use Mozilla or Firefox, this feature is built right in. Just highlight some text on a webpage, right mouse click, and select "view selection source"

You also get Tabbed browsing and built-in popup blocking. Internet Explorer is really just not up to competing against other browsers on a feature basis.

Firefox has the same thing built in. You can get more info using the webdeveloper plugin.

If you're stuck on IE and want to view all source, you can buy a plug in called Instant Source that shows the html source in divided window at the bottom of the browser.

I will copy and paste code into FR and sometimes the link looks the same, except where it might say "www.aaaaa.com/abcdefg.htm" on the original web page it shows up/translates into FR as "www.freerepublic.com/abcdefg.htm" Therefore, no one can access the link because only www.aaaaa.com/abcdefg.htm exists not www.freerepublic.com/abcdefg.htm. Anyway idea how to fix that? Drives me crazy!

I usually use it just to snake the URL for pictures I want to link in my posts. I know there are better tools for web development.

Hmmm. Can't say I've had that happen. It shouldn't do that if you are pasting the raw HTML as text. Unless the FR servers change the links - but I don't think they do.

I've had that happen. That is because the link is relative to the website where it is extracted. That means, the URL addy is assumed.

The only way to correct it is to physically replace the href=".../link.ext with href="http://www.xyz.com/link.ext

BearCub, If you're still there, can I give you an example?

Hover your mouse pointer over the links on the bottom of the page. The links at the bottom are directed toward FR instead of the issues2000.org domain.

The only difference I see is that the links that are linking to FR say "click here" instead of ANYTHING else.

Voted YES on banning lawsuits against gun manufacturers for gun violence.

Vote to pass a bill that would block certain civil lawsuits against manufacturers, distributors, dealers and importers of firearms and ammunition, mainly those lawsuits aimed at making them liable for gun violence. In this bill, trade groups would also be protected The bill would call for the dismissal of pending lawsuits against the gun industry. The exception would be lawsuits regarding a defect in a weapon or ammunition. It also would provide a 10-year reauthorization of the assault weapons ban which is set to expire in September 2004. The bill would increase the penalties for gun-related violent or drug trafficking crimes which have not resulted in death, to a minimum of 15 years imprisonment. The bill calls for criminal background checks on all firearm transactions at gun shows where at least 75 guns are sold. Exemptions would be made available for dealers selling guns from their homes as well as members-only gun swaps and meets carried out by nonprofit hunting clubs. Yes it is. I usually do a search and replace in a text editor if there are several. The notepad with XP and WordPad allow search and replace. Otherwise, I just copy the missing part of the URL and paste at the beginning of each href=" area.
