Pollster picks Kerry - but Bush leads at 2pm
All the statistical barometers point to a victory for Kerry says respected pollster, with more than 30 electoral college votes to spare
3 November 2004
A highly-respected pollster says Senator John Kerry will win the US Presidential election.
John Zogby , unlike all the other pollsters, correctly picked the 2000 election result.
But this time he says the vote will go against President Bush.
He says all the statistical barometers point to a victory for the Democrat, with more than 30 electoral college votes to spare, picking up 311 electoral college votes.
John Zogby says, in fact, his figures show almost anyone could have beaten Bush as people are voting against him rather than for John Kerry.
Briefing journalists in Washington a few minutes after the first polls closed, Mr Zogby said some battleground states such as Florida were very close - but in the end, he believes the sunshine state will go to Kerry.
He also believes Virginia, another battleground state, will go to Kerry
However, an hour after the first polls closed, George Bush was extending his lead.
The president is predicted to win West Virginia and its five electoral votes will take his total to 39.
John Kerry is still on just three votes after winning Vermont.
Two hundred and seventy electoral votes are needed to claim the White House.
Analysts say the scorecard is not yet indicative of the final result as Bush was always expected to win the states that have been declared for him.
In exit polls of eleven thousand voters by CNN, the majority of men questioned have voted for Bush, while the majority of women have opted for Kerry.
Meanwhile, President Bush has won the first of the battleground states.
CNN is predicting a win for Bush in West Virginia, which carries five electoral votes.
With counting still in its early stages, Fox News is predicting Bush has also picked up Georgia, Indiana and Kentucky, while Kerry has picked up the three electoral votes in Vermont.
That gives Bush a 39 - 3 lead in the race for 270 electoral votes nationwide.
In the popular vote, after one percent of counting, Bush leads Kerry by 58 to 42 percent.
Earlier, while millions of Americans stood in line to vote, one cast his ballot from space.
Astronaut Leroy Chiao made his choice in an encrypted e-mail sent from the International Space Station.
NASA has forwarded his ballot to electoral officials in Texas where Chiao lives.
It is the first time someone has voted from orbit.
Yesterday afternoon Zogby and Drudge had FR Nation considering sharp objects and open windows.
I'm sure Kerry lawyers will protest.
Instead of hunting for geese...Kerry may go hunting for the
Zogster.....
Zogby completely lost face with his partisan predictions. A pollster should never shape predictions, but merely report the numbers as accurately as possible. He was a victim of his own aspirations and disdain for Bush.
Kerry to win 311 electoral votes?! Man, way off!
Zogby should be forced to work at 7-11 now. I wonder if he can tell me how much a slurpee is within 1% of the actual price.
Zogby was bought and paid for and he delivered.
Mr. Zogby would do well to go back and analyze why HIS analysis is so far off.
Could the Radical Islamic Terrorist and their sympathizers have lost?
It actually makes it sweeter that the Dems thought they were on the verge of victory.
Hugh Hewitt said Zogby's reputation is done.
Only those who, after all the msm has attempted in this election, still believed the exit polling.
A highly-respected pollster
Not any more. Real pollster don't get caught looking at the erroneous exit polls before making their final "predictions."
Congrats Mr Bush! It is amazing that he was able to win considering the monumental effort by 527s & George Soros' 25 million $, the MSMedia, sKerry's mudslinging staff, constant Iraq war negatives, almost all of Europe hating him, Hollywood stars (who will regret it) went against him... amazing and well done. While it's not likely, the Dems have a real chance here to learn what works and what does not. Hate will never get a lib into the Whitehouse.
