The 7-Hour Presidency of JFK2 - Let the vicious backbiting begin
Slate kausfiles A mostly political Weblog ^ | November 3, 2004 | Mickey Kaus

The Seven Hour Presidency: The following email from an anonymous but very knowledgeable source seems to summarize yesterday quite effectively:

[T]he VNS [leadership] from 2000 (disaster) and 2002 (complete collapse of VNS) must be overjoyed with the utterly dreadful performance of the much ballyhooed National Election Pool [which conducted the 2004 exit polls]. They f*** up the national poll, countless state polls (Virginia is a toss-up, I don't think so!) and God knows what else. The entire news media goes off on a completelymisguided goose chase (or goose hunt!) for SEVEN HOURS (from 2-9pm), and since few of them have any idea how to read a county vote table, many of them keep pumping the Kerry wins fable.

It's an unbelievable f***-up.

I fell for it myself--emailing several Democratic friends to assure them that Kerry was looking good (though mainly I fell for that Ipsos weekend telephone poll). [More: see also RealClearPolitics's report--search for "Sabato."] ... Why were the exit polls so off? My nominee is Reason 3 from Mystery Pollster's list--"Voting patterns may be different early in the day." Specifically, angrier voters vote earlier. This year, Kerry voters were angrier, so angry that they lined up at the polls as soon as they could in the morning and got disproportionately counted by the NEP survey-takers. Unfortunately, they could only vote once, and their vote was cancelled by the less angry Republicans who sauntered in later in the day. Just a theory. ... Next question: ...

Is Zogby Nailed to the Perch? He waits until 5:00 P.M. on Election Day to make his "2004 Predictions," and still gets it all wrong! 12:49 A.M.

I was right! Kerry should have dropped out in New Hampshire. 12:43 A.M.

Unfortunately?

Bush camp declares victory, Kerry camp says race not over ***President Bush crept close to re-election early Wednesday, leading challenger John Kerry in a campaign cliffhanger framed by war in Iraq and joblessness at home. Ohio held the key, stirring echoes of Florida in 2000, but this time Bush's advantage was substantial.

With a majority of the popular vote in hand, the Republican president planned to declare victory early Wednesday. ``We are convinced that President Bush has won re-election,'' White House chief of staff Andrew Card said shortly before dawn in the East.

Ceding nothing, Kerry went to bed without conceding. ``We will fight for every vote,'' his running mate, Sen. John Edwards, told supporters in Boston, where he and the four-term Massachusetts senator waited out the late, long count.

Card said Bush not only won a second term but Republicans added ``to our majority in the House and ... to our majority in the Senate.''

As Bush made plans to declare victory, his high command dispatched a 10-person political and legal team to Ohio in the event Kerry triggered a Florida-like fight. Card said Bush delayed his own public statement to ``give Senator Kerry the respect of more time to reflect on the results of this election.''

That was a veiled request for Kerry to bow out gracefully, and avoid the rancor that accompanied a 36-day recount in Florida four years ago.

That margin was small, but Bush's lead in Ohio is substantial - Card called it ``statistically insurmountable, even after provisional ballots are considered.''

With Bush leading by 145,000 votes and roughly 190,000 yet to be counted, one top Kerry adviser said the Democrat's chances of winning Ohio, and with it the White House, were difficult at best. ...***

ISN'T THIS FANTASTIC?! [John Podhoretz]
The media won't call it, even though it's happened. They're graceless. So is Kerry. They are tying themselves to this depressing loser. It's everything I ever wanted.

angrier voters vote earlier

I think there is an even bigger factor. Republicans have jobs and pay taxes, so they have to wait until quitting time to get to the polls. Unemployed welfare leech Democrats can vote any time during the day and so vote early (and often).

I wonder what it was like in ancient times when people voted, they counted the votes, and they announced who won? Such a simple concept.

Around 7:30 PM election eve WCRB, Boston's classical music station, was playing La Marseillaise. A stirring piece and nicely performed, but an odd choice. I was wondering if it was intended a Kerry victory celebration?

What a great article title! LOL @ 7-hour presidency of JFK2.

The exit polls theory is interesting, but just maybe there are Republicans who have better things to do than line up early in the morning and wait for hours to vote. Possibly some of them voted later because they were working? or voted absentee like I did to avoid the hassles at the polling place.
