Bin Laden warns of retaliation

DUBAI (Reuters) - Osama bin Laden has said in a full Internet broadcast of a video, partly aired by Al Jazeera last week, that George W. Bush had dragged the United States into a quagmire in Iraq and warned of retaliation for Iraqi deaths.

In the video posted on websites often used by Islamists, as results from the U.S. presidential election were being announced on Wednesday, bin Laden said Bush had ignored advice against "an unjustified war on Iraq for which there would be no end".

The video appeared to be bin Laden's first direct threat against the United States over deaths in Iraq.

Fighters loyal to Washington's top foe in Iraq, Jordanian militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, have recently pledged allegiance to the al Qaeda leader.

"The black gold (oil) blinded him and he put his personal interests above the general interests of America so the war took place, many died, American money was squandered and Bush was dragged into a quagmire in Iraq which threatens his future," the al Qaeda leader said in the video, dated October 24.

"More than 15,000 of our people were killed and tens of thousands wounded and more than 1,000 of your people (Americans) were killed and tens of thousands wounded. Bush's hands are sullied with the blood of those on both sides just for oil and to employ his private companies," bin Laden said....

"Remember that for every action, there is a reaction," he said, adding that al Qaeda would carry on fighting the United States "until it forces it into bankruptcy".

Weird. I posted a comment and it says "3 of 2" in my ping view, and doesn't appear in the thread.

Anyway, just wanted to crack wise about how clearly there is no terror/bin laden/iraq connection. Funny too the different tone of the coverage of the video now that the voting is done.

Laden has basicly discredited himself and his organization by not being able to carry out any more direct attacks against the United States.

I heard a report on the radio yesterday where middle-eastern experts were stating that the pro-Laden Arab on the street has lost respect for him. He's not a player any longer in their eyes.

The U.S. acts within the middle-eastern sphere with impungnity and Laden is reduced to releasing a new video tape every three to six months. His network has been crushed and he appears imputent. Gotta like that assessment.

"Quagmire" is an odd word for bin Laden to use. I wonder where he picked it up. ;-)

Thank you for Free Republic. According to Huge Hewitt, the site's efforts helped bring President Bush over the top.
