Officials fear terrorists might have it

The FBI is concerned about a tanker missing since April from TK Transportation, saying it may be in the hands of terrorists because no sign of the truck has surfaced.
"Usually when a tanker is stolen, someone uses it to fill it with a toxic chemical or something that they don't want to dispose of legally," said FBI spokeswoman Jerri Williams. "They abandon it on the side of a road or somewhere. Even if someone stole it to strip it for parts, the shell would remain. But there has been no trace of the tanker anywhere."
Tankers filled with gasoline or other chemicals have been used as bombs by terrorists outside the United States for years.
Williams said the tanker bore the markings "TK."
"It could be parked along a street, in a lot, at a warehouse, or in a barn somewhere. We just don't know where it is or who may have it. We want people to be on the lookout for it," she said.
The empty, four-compartment truck, which is capable of carrying about 9,200 gallons of fuel, was taken from the TK Transport Terminal on Derousse Avenue sometime between April 8 and 12.
The tanker had a New Jersey license plate number T852SC and a New Jersey Motor Fuel Tag Number 15148.

Me too. As a fellow Washingtonian, I also share a particular fondness for ferries. They seem to be an easy, high profile, target, even though capturing/destroying one would not damage the nation as a whole.
On balance, I am still on the "largest surprise attack in history" side. The reason is not the barrage of Al Qaida propaganda. Yeah, yeah, they hate us, they are truly evil, and they would vaporize us all if they could. But that does not mean they can...
I still think the attack is coming because I trust the President and his men, I don't believe they would deliberately overplay this, and they seem to take it very, very seriously.
Believe it or not, my position is identical to yours. I have been with TM since Day 1, and have read, probably 80% of the posts, and there has been some pretty scary crapola. Many times in the last year, I have wondered if "this was it".
I took exception to most of the work of the 9/11 commission (aka Hindsight Commission), but one thing has always struck me - they said we suffered from a lack of creativity. Well, I would say the TM'ers have been VERY creative in connecting dots and envisioning possible scenarios.
Like you, I have this near-optimism that we have eradicated the threat. Then, I remember, there is some significant number of people in this world who pray five times each day for the opportunity to martyr themselves while killing you, me, and as many other Americans as possible. That thought is profoundly troubling.

I feel conflicted the way you do. However, during the campaign I happened to talk to an old friend who has been VERY involved with Kerry for a long time. We were having a very light, humorous conversation. When I casually asked if he thought the whole terror threat was a political ploy on the part of the White House - a perfect opportunity to bash Bush - his face grew dark, he lowered his voice and he denied it was a political thing. His reaction reinforced my worries.
