Republican victories for Democratic-held seats in North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia assured the GOP of at least 50 seats in the Senate that convenes on Jan. 3. Under complicated rules in effect, that assured Republicans of control regardless of the outcome of the presidential election. A victory by President Bush would give Vice President Dick Cheney the ability to break ties. A victory by Sen. John Kerry would force him to resign his seat in Congress, and give the GOP a 50-49 advantage until his successor was elected in late spring or summer.
PLUS:
We now have Dr. Tom Coburn in the US Senate!
WOW! This is gonna be good!!!
Its been a good night for the Senate, only a couple of disappointments. I think we will have 54 or 55 GOP Senators.
is it over for dachle? God I hope so.
I think the GOP also has the most career strikeouts in the US Senate with the addition of Jim Bunning to the roster.
Last I saw Thune was winning.
Last I checked(about 5 min ago) they were 50% each. Just a few hundred votes separation. And presumably the reservations haven't really reported in in any numbers yet. Doesn't look good for Thune, but it ain't over yet.
Right now, it looks like the Senate will be 53-46-1 (53-47, when you throw in Jumpin' Jim Jeffords), Republicans. This doesn't not include the Dasshole seat... 54-46 would be nice. But, I'll take a Bush victory and a 53-47 Senate.
Georgia did it's part. Georgia elected a Republican Senator to take the place of the great and wonderful Zell Miller :-)
AOL Web site: http://elections.channel.aol.com/ has the new Senate so far at GOP 54, Dems 44, a 4 seat pick-up
Talk about close:
U.S. SENATE
(D) DASCHLE TOM . . . . . . . 105771 -- 50%
(R) THUNE JOHN . . . . . . . . . 107835 -- 50%
490/827 precincts (11:20 EST)
There is going to be at least a 53 seat count for the GOP in the senate..maybe 54 if Dashole gets hoisted.
I am hoping that poll watchers will suppress the illegal votes sufficiently to throw it our way. Thune wudda won 2 years ago were it not for fraud.
Even if Kerry wins he looses with a senate stacked like that. Although the rinos..
Pubs up 2 seats possibly 4? This is excellent.
Friggin' AP. A +2 or +3 pikup is considered holding the Senate.
Let's hope the reservation natives will vote the right way this time.
Did anyone else see on CBS earlier tonight ~9-9:30 PM they had a count of "Estimated Senate Seats". Their breakdown at that time was D=49, R=41, I=1, and Undecided=9. I don't know how they could call the Senate at 50 for the Dems (including Jeffords) so early in the night. Maybe I was just seeing things or reading the table wrong?
Don't forget NC's Burr defeats Bowles. A two Pubbie-Senate State.
