Overhelpful (crooked) poll workers
11/2/04 | Me

I just got back from my shift as a poll watcher in the predomiantly black area here is SC. What I saw was poll workers not asking if the adress was the same as the id. The biggest thing I saw was that the poll workers were hovering over voters. If some voter acted a bit clueless, well then the poll worker was right in there with the voter and the electronic vote machine. In several instances their hands were in the machine, who knows pushing what. So much for pretending to act impartial or standoffish. I brought this to the attention of the poll chairman and he would say something but this was just putting a finger in a dike. It is almost a cultural thing with the workers in that they don't know any better. I vote in this precict and know that Bush does not win here. However, what I saw at least looked very suspicious.

If You See or Hear About Vote Fraud, Call the Department of Justice at 202-514-2000

Ask to speak with an attorney at the Voting Rights Division, and explain that you have specific information.

Also, you may contact the FBI at https://tips.fbi.gov/

Of course, it helps to have a camera to catch them in action.

A problem I noticed too, now that you mention it, was that they have your address in the voter book, and then ask you to confirm it...

You could just read it right off their book back to them. Heheh..

This sort of "help" is almost traditional in Black areas...even though it is illegal.

Report anything and everything. If it is close our side needs to have every claim ready.

Look, the people working these places are not capable keeping any kind of job. There is no way they are prepared to deal with fraud and they are commiting fraud themselves because they either don't know any better or they just are dumb.

Unfortunately I saw the same thing this morning.

At 7:04 a.m. I was voter No. 5 in my district.

The lady ahead of me was No. 4, when she got to her booth with ballot in hand (we fill in ovals much like the grade school tests) the first issue was a state referendum. She immediately declared she had made a mistake, it’s a simple YES or NO question!! She wanted the poll worker to explain to her HOW she should vote on this issue!

The guy behind me stated that he just moved and this was his NEW precinct but was not registered here, they signed him up anyway and handed him a ballot and a privacy guard (ballot slides into it upon return)

His first question was how does the ballot go into the privacy guard! (Thinking that you could somehow fill in the ovals while the ballot was covered up)

All I could do was shake my head as I walked out thinking if we’re only up to voter No. 6 and this is any indication of how things would run. (By the way, the poll worker was still with voter No. 4 as I made my exit)

8^)

Well I just reported it to the Bush/Cheyney line and the Dept. of Justice. The poll workers are under teh impression it's just a party and their friends come by to see them. WTF!

I saw one kid that showed up, waited in line an hour and was surprised he couldn't vote because he didn't register. The poll worker took him aside and seemed to try to solve his problem. Didn't know you could fix that on election day.

I headed off to vote at the little Epsicopal church just down the street from us here in Tampa. When we got there before 7 AM 200 people in line ahead of us. It took us an hour to get to the head of the line and vote. I had problems with the electronic machine I was using, as soon as I inserted my vote card the message "invalid voter" appeared on the screen and the machine locked up. I summoned the young man who was working my machine and was VERY impressed with the way he responded! He came over and stood in front of me where he could not see my screen and asked me a couple of questions. He seemed to be making certain that he was not in a position to view my screen, even when it had nothing but the error message. A couple of other voters had questions and I was very impressed with how they handled the situations. I know it's not this way everywhere around the country, but I feel pretty sure my experience was representative of that of millions of other voters.
