Ronald J. Sinacore, the George Mason University associate director of Equity and Diversity Services who was recently arrested on charges of recording sexual encounters with minors, was arrested again Oct. 28 and has been the subject of continued student concern and an announcement by Provost Peter Stearns.
As cited in Oct. 28 report in The Washington Post, Sinacore was found by police in a New York Avenue, Northeast D.C. motel “sick and semiconscious,” taken to Howard University Hospital for treatment and then arrested. According to The Washington Post, the latest charges against Sinacore allege that he manufactured and possessed child pornography and tried to extort $10,000 from one of his alleged victims.
A press release issued by the Fairfax County, Va. police indicated Sinacore faced additional counts of the two former charges at the time of his Oct. 19 arrest. In an affidavit, Fairfax County Police Detective Peter Charles said those initial charges arose when a 20-year-old male disclosed to police that he and Sinacore engaged in a “casual sexual relationship” for a period of two years, beginning when the male was 16.
Pending the outcome of the police investigation into these allegations, Mason Executive Director of University Relations Dan Walsch said that Sinacore had been placed on leave without pay. He added that though Mason sometimes covers the legal fees of its employees, that would not occur in this case.

Despite this fact, and Sinacore's arrest, many Mason students said they were upset that Sinacore was a part of the Mason community and would be uneasy about approaching his office if they needed help with sexual harassment issues.
Economics major Doug Norman said, “I definitely won't be going there now.”
Communication majors Becca Maguire and Evelyn Herrera said they were concerned that Sinacore has been part of the community. “It's scary to think he's affiliated with any school,” Maguire said.
In a statement sent to faculty and staff, Provost Peter Stearns said, “With the rest of the Mason community, the administration has been extremely distressed by the situation.”
He added that he understands the concerns of Equity office patrons and members of the community and is “quite willing to discuss concerns from anyone in the university community.”
An informal Broadside survey found that as of Oct. 29, this message had not been sent to Mason students. Stearns said this was a matter of oversight. “There was no plot,” he said.
According to Fairfax County officials, Sinacore is set to appear in court on Nov. 5.
