Therein lies part of the problem. There are a lot of rural 'conservative' democrats -- especially out in 'farmland' territory. Their families have always been Democrats. Even though the Democrats no longer represent their values, they are still ignorant and vote D anyway.
I've done telephone surveys, asking questions on:
Abortion
Balancing Budget by cutting spending/raising taxes
Homeland Security
Each answer is purely conservative.
Then the final question: "Do you find yourself voting more frequently for Republican candidates or Democrat candidates."
Answer: "Oh, Democrat, of course"
Well, my wife and I just got back from voting in Eastside of St. Paul. No line at all...plenty of parking spaces. The normal election workers were there, but no poll watchers that I could see. Nobody was outside with posters or signs or anything like that.
The polling place is a church. Just down the hall from the polling place, kids from a local grammar school were coming in, one class at a time, to cast votes in a mock election. Pretty interesting.
Now it's time to sit back and watch the returns come in. I think we'll order Chinese food tonight. Isn't THAT interesting?
I heard that Sweden is looking into privatising their social security! Hope we get around to doing it here first.
Minnesota was conservative enough in 2002 to elect Norm Coleman over Walter Mondale. In fact, I believe the state was conservative enough that Coleman would have won even against the incumbent Wellstone.
I agree that there is a very positive trend in our state. If we can- just-- get--- over----- this------ last------ hump, I think we'll send a clear signal about the direction our state is headed.
We just got back from voting. It seemed busier than other years, but we also went later in the afternoon than we had in other years. Some people were voting in the booths, others were voting at tables.
Thank goodness my "undecided" mother called and told me she voted for Bush!
It would be so great if MN went for Bush!
From your lips too Gods ear!

2 reasons:St.Paul and MPLS.
What is the ethnic makeup of St Paul Minneapolis? Or is the problem something other than ethnicity?
It's probalby what drives the rest of the blue areas in the nation...cacademia/liberal religious, deluded ethnic minorities, citizen immigrants, and 20 bucks per vote types. But I don't know...enlighten me about Minnesota.
many colleges
many new immigrants( pubbies haven't done enough work there)
a long history of DFL(my old district was and is 30+ years
of all dims)
lower incomes (dims promise more free treats-mass transit and such)
higher crime (hence the get out the felon vote)
