Fort Collins - Law enforcement problems at football games have intensified since Colorado State University banned beer sales at its stadium in the wake of a binge-drinking death.
"The drinking has increased," campus Police Chief Dexter Yarborough said Thursday at a meeting of CSU's alcohol task force.
"People are coming to the stadium more intoxicated than they were before."
Yarborough told the panel, formed after the death of 19-year-old sophomore Samantha Spady, that his officers have been spit upon and hit with objects thrown by unruly fans who sneak liquor into the stadium or get drunk before arriving.
The task force, which met for the second time Thursday, is studying alcohol education and practices at other schools and ways to curb college drinking. The beer ban at the stadium has gotten the most reaction from the community, as most of the panel's 200 e-mails concern the topic.

"I think we've reached the point where enforcement of existing policies have reached their limit," said Anne Hudgens, who oversees the school's judicial affairs office and is a member of the panel. "You reach the saturation point with students and then you cross into an adversarial position."
Campus police patrolling tailgate parties outside Hughes Stadium report behavior from students that crosses into what Yarborough called "atrocious."
"Police officers really don't care a whole lot about your cultural norming when people are spitting at them and calling them names that you wouldn't call anybody," he said.
University president Larry Penley formed the task force after the death of Spady last month.
The former homecoming queen from Beatrice, Neb., died in a fraternity after drinking at least 30 drinks in 11 hours.
Instead of beer, it's now liquor before the game to get drunk for the game.
They'll never catch up to CU.
Why punish everyone cause one girl was a moron?
Alcohol prohibition was almost as big a disaster as the prohibition on recreational drugs. It only leads to people killing each other over territory and more and more restrictive laws to deal with the problems it causes.
Stupid rule. Now everyone shows up extra drunk so that the high will last for the 3 hours it takes to watch a game.
Is it just me? Or do people get stupid when they drink, I have no problem with you doing what ever to your own body, but when you get stupid around me, then we have a problem. Be responsible........
This is what happens when people don't pay attention in history class.
"A definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different outcome."
Because personal responsibility is much less likely to be something of which the courts approve, when their trial lawyer buddies stand to make millions off of the frats and the school when they sue both for not keeping this idiot away from a bottle. School officials prefer, as a result, to ban alcohol outright so as to have no issues regarding their liability.
This girl was an idiot. People lift the glass themselves. Peer pressure only works when you bend to it. And we as a nation have bent to the pressure of trial lawyers to the point that we just don't think about this kind of thing any more and the loss of other minor freedoms that we enjoyed before society was made safe by their ridiculous suits. Enjoy your coke at the football game, CSU fans. And thank your neighborhood ambulance chaser for it.
Prohibition should have taught us that it won't work, that is why it was repealed.
Secondly, the WAR on Drugs won't work, it never has and we keep throwing money down a rat hole. Morality cannot be regulated. People must be taught to be moral, and they must be brought to point they want to behave.
Why create a black market and more criminals...its a vicious cycle and has nothing to do with what Libertarians want..which is ability to smoke or do drugs.
It's just common sense.
" Why punish everyone cause one girl was a moron?"because they can...
American prohibitionism - alive and well.
I tried to think up a good drinking game for the eclipse last week but nothing good came to mind.
Geeez! Prohibition was tried on a national scale back in the 1920's. Didn't work then, ain't gonna work now.
I guess they could give breathalyzer tests to fans when they enter the stadium. Of course the teams might not want to play in front of nearly-empty stands.
So, administer a wood-shampoo, rinse, and repeat.
Banning alcohol made it worse. Since they can't drink at the football game, they just drink before and show up drunk. Oh gees, that is bad. So much for Prohibition, a failure.
Same here. I hate it when people are drunk in public. They can be real violent.
