BAGHDAD (AFP) - Some 3,000 gunmen have recently been detained in Iraq (news - web sites) in recent days who had been working for a deputy of ousted president Saddam Hussein (news - web sites), the country's interm prime minister said.
"In a very short time we have arrested 3,000 gunmen who were working under Izzat al-Duri (the former vice president of Iraq who is still on the run)," Iyad Allawi told a news conference in Baghad.
One of Duri's own deputies and his assistant were also detained, he said, adding that the operation was still continuing.
"We confiscated a large amount of weapons and explosive devices," Allawi said.
Allawi did not say where the operation was taking place nor when it began.
Good news. Now if they can only capture Izzat al-Duri!
Better to capture him. He knows everything Saddam knows.
Stand them, along with their family members, against a wall and shoot them!
Allawi is smart not to say much. Keep the islamo-facists guessing.
Wow! I'm shocked the MSM let this get out before the election!
And 3,000 are still alive!!!!
They announced his capture, then claimed it wasn't really him and that he's still on the run... I wonder if they really did capture him and are now using him to lure anti-coalition fighters. (And maybe he agreed to cooperate for a lighter sentence...)
Lawrence O'Donnell has this message for the Prime Minister of Iraq:
