Kuwait oil refineries halt production due to power cut
KUWAIT CITY : Kuwait's three oil refineries, which have an output capacity of 920,000 barrels a day, halted production due to a total power outage that hit the emirate, a Kuwait National Petroleum Co. spokesman told AFP.
"The three oil refineries stopped operating gradually after the power cut (which hit) the country", said Mohammad al-Hajeri.
"An attempt to throw the markets into chaos a day before our election."
It's not going to help.
Interesting that only foriegn news outlets are running this story. Our slackard media is still in bed........
The "country" is smaller than Vermont, Massachusetts or New Hampshire.
I was in Kuwait over Y2K. We had huge generators brought to the base in case the power failed. It didn't.
We didn't care anyway because we had our own tactical power.
about as easy as it was for the entire Eastern part of the US to lose power last summer.
Nationwide in Kuwait does not mean very much.
If you picked up all of Kuwait and set it down in the mid-west it would be like a big city in a mid-size rural county. Not much once you get outside the city limits.
We're have the opposite here on the Gulf Coast...unusually warm and dry for October.
We have a wood burning stove that is very effective in our family room. We haven't had to use it for the last 3 years.
We have a fairly new and well insulated roof and about 1/3 of the house has new and very effective double paned windows. More will be installed this month. In spite of the insulation, new windows and other stuff, it has been colder than normal in N. California in October.
"Am I the only one thinking...you know...oil refineries should have, say, gas powered generators on the premesis? I mean...come on!"
You're right. It seems Kuwait has a very centralized power grid that is not at all redundant. It has to be a -huge- bother to shutdown and restart a refinery without doing any damage or losing significant output.
Most of our domestic power generation has few backups. A large regional outage makes it very difficult to restore power in a timely fashion.
Go to Google and type "Dark Start". You may never take off your tinfoil hat again!
My wife's oldest brother and wife just got back from a two drive and stay on the Gulf Coast and in the Gulf side of Florida. They wore shorts most of the trip. It was freezing where they live in Illinois the day they left.
Except for SeeB.S. They have had time to do another hit piece on our troops and President for 60 Min. tonight.
Buy an electric heater and a long extension cord. That's what I do, why heat your whole house when all you need to do is heat the room you are in ?
My hubby is a carpenter, he has installed double paned windows as well. The insulation is top notch. Winters here are fairly ok..sometimes it gets below 30.
With the heaters and fireplace we'll be ok.
Here's a hint> in the winter I disconnect the tubbing from my dryer to the outside. It puts all the heat from the dryer right into the house. No wasted heat.
I haven't used gas heat in two years, it's turned off from the outside. I use a heat dish and stay warmer than when I used my gas heater. My gas heat is not forced air and when I turned it on it used to dry out the air so bad my nose would get plugged up.
No reudundancy or backup systems for their power grid? I few generators should be able to keep a refinery running. Good grief!
