I will let you in on a SECRET about our health care:
IT IS FREE!!!!!!!FREE I SAY, FREE!!!!
I pay about 48% in taxes, mostly goes to pay the health care system. DO YOU KNOW WHAT I GET for 48%, LET ME START.
I get 7-15 HOURS of waiting time in the emergency room.
I get to wait 3 months to see a doctor so he can tell me that I need to wait another YEAR to have a surgical procedure done.
I get to go to DOCTORS for NOTHING JUST SO THEY can CHARGE the government.
I broke my fingers, and you know, the doctors put it in a cast, and I thank them for it, but 3 years later (NO OPERATION only therapy) I still have misery making a fist. They did NOTHING, my mother could have told me what the doctors said to me. ALL THEY DID WAS GIVE ME APPOINTMENTS SO THEY CAN CHARGE THE GOVERNMENT.
Oh yeah - did I mention that we don't have a military - I am sure you heard about the second hand (pre owned) submarines we bought from Great Britain, one of the subs while being transfered to Canada caught fire and killed a marine...
We are broke, our system is broke!!!!

I hear they get free dental care in England.

Thank you for posting this. But I have to say that I'm cynical on this particular issue--I think it's going to happen here because too many people see free health care as a "right". JMHO.
That is true, but first you have to find a dentist.
I understand that not only is the Canadian healthcare system in trouble, the British, French and German systems are headed for insolvency. Kerry knows he cannot really deliver on "universal healthcare", he uses this rhetoric to fire up his base.

Expect Taxes to go way way up, or cuts in other department, usually military.
My brother in law in Boston pays about 8000$ per year on health insurance (YOUR HOSPITALS LOOK LIKE HOTELS, ours look like chicken farms) and when he adds what he pays in taxes + what he pays in Health Insurance, he is still way below the 48% I pay, and I do not make much, just over $50K Canadian.
Do NOT lose what you have, you have a great deal...
I guess the rest goes to paying for that boondoggle gun registration system?
Geez, I feel for ya! What, if anything, is going on up there to change things. I can't imagine how you stand it!
Medical care will never cost so much as when it is free!
We have a saying up here:
"Don't go to the Hospital, you might die!"
You think that's bad. 15 years ago (when I was 19) I had a severe stroke that nearly killed me. I'm still partially paralyzed. I went to St. Patrick's in Toronto almost two months before it happened. I was always dizzy and vomitting. My left side would get very weak and I would collapse. I had severe headaches. Classic signs of an impending stroke. The doctor refused to give me an MRI (instead he gave me a blood test) and sent me on my way. Two months later I woke up completely paralyzed in a hospital bed.
I like your comment about our hospitals looking like hotels.
Up until recently, I worked (on an as needed basis) at a local hospital here. Employees there complained about the hospital looking like a hotel but patients still sleeping on lumpy, old mattresses. (and the hospital is quite beautiful, IMO)
Well, let's try that then. We've got to do something!!! People are getting sick, and only illegal aliens can get free health care here--we can't. WE'VE GOT TO DO SOMETHING!!!!
These are the kind of arguments my spouse is making, while she says she's voting for Kerry because at least he will get us health insurance. (We can't get it because I'm self-employed, diabetic, and she has high liver enzymes).
She says government health care can't be any worse than what we've got now. She won't listen to any reason. She just does not realize that medical procedures we CAN get now if we pay for them won't be available under government health care, unless we're filthy rich, which we're not.
My only hope is that not too many people are as dumb as my wife.
How can we keep America from adopting Socialized Medicine?

In spite of the free healthcare in Cuba, few seem to be moving there.
While we were in Canada this past August, I read a newspaper article where Canada is trying to figure out how to get more doctors.
