Japan government confirms body is Japanese hostage

30 minutes ago Top Stories - AFP

TOKYO (AFP) - The Japanese government has confirmed that a head and body found in Baghdad are the remains of Japanese hostage Shosei Koda, the foreign minister said.

Koda, 24, was threatened with beheading by Islamic militants in a video released on the Internet late Tuesday if Japan did not withdraw its troops from Iraq (news - web sites) within 48 hours. Japan had refused the demand.

"Unfortunately we have confirmed that the body is that of Shosei Koda," Foreign Minister Nobutaka Machimura told a news conference.

"We deeply regret that he has become a victim of terrorism," Machimura said. "We express our deep condolences to his family."

The decapitated body was found near Haifa Street in a notorious area in the centre of the capital on Saturday, said colonel Adnan Abdul Rahman, a spokesman for the Iraqi interior ministry.

Iraqi officials said the head and body was found wrapped in a US flag. The hands and feet of the corpse had been tied and there were two bullet wounds, a police officer said.

The Coaliton forces all follow the same rules and constraints. They come under the control of whichever nation heads the sectors they are deployed in.

Did you forget? Japan was just bribed to be there. They are a just a crappy little island. There is no real coalition or support. They probably deserve to have their innocent citizens beheaded anyway...

You forgot the sarcasm tag.

Copies of Mainichi newspaper's extra edition are handed out on a street in Tokyo after a report that a Japanese hostage was beheaded in Iraq.

Parents of beheaded man in shock

NOGATA, Fukuoka -- The elder brother of the Japanese man found murdered in Baghdad said his parents were unable to respond when a city official visited on Sunday due to shock.

Maki Koda, the 26-year-old brother, and his aunt met with an official from the local Nogata Municipal Government at about 11 a.m.

The brother told the official, "After being informed of what happened, my father and mother are in no mood to talk. From now on I will deal with officials."

The brother then read a statement he and his parents had prepared.

"We want to make an apology to those who have supported us as they have been concerned over the affair. We hope that Iraq will recover peace as soon as possible."

The brother is set to talk with Foreign Ministry officials over whether to visit the Middle East to recover the body of the man, Shosei Koda, or wait for its return to Japan.

Nogata Mayor Toshiaki Kono said that his local government would think about how to care for the Koda family.

"I have indescribable rage against those (who killed Koda). After talking with the central and Fukuoka prefectural governments, we will come up with measures to support the family," he said. (Mainichi Shimbun, Japan, Oct. 31, 2004)

I don't believe that for a minute. I'm certain that al Qaeda suspects in Afghanistan are turned over to Pakistani intelligence people as well as ours. They are allowed to employ certain methods we couldn't get away with.

My prayers are with this man, the salvation of his soul, and consolation for his family and friends.

This morning in church my mind was led to stay focused on this man in prayer, even when I tried to move on to other things. I believe this young man badly needs our prayers. May God have mercy on his soul!!!

Disgusting vermin-sadists. May they meet their "72 virgins" extremely soon.

This man was only 24 years old.

I can only hope the shot him before beheading him. Those beheading are so terrible and inhumane. Prayers to his family and loved ones.

Where's the outrage in the MSM?

The survivors of the Bataan death march are outraged.
