Bush is a moderate, not a conservative. Bush, however, is a good and possibly great president. He was the best choice in 2000 and he is the best choice now.

If FreeRepublic is to be a KoolAid republican asylum, then include me out. But I never thought that it was a hook, line and sinker forum of ideas. FreeRepublic draws me back here multiple times a day for the brisk exchange of concepts and philosophies amongst an intelligent lot of people. May it ever be so.

Nice try with the 1984 reference but Barr is the one who said he was supporting the Libertarian candidate.

And he's not alone.

So why should FR ban a previously-lauded friend of conservatives, unless it's just a front for the Republican Party?

I don't believe FR is that, or should be that, so I have no problem with links to Bob Barr here.

Thank God FR wasn't born just to shill for the New And Improved Big-Government Republican Party.

It was really obnoxious to call for the removal of the ad for the book. Your call smacked of book-burningism writ large. That's why I took offense to it.

Pulling an ad is NOT the same as book burning.

Would you support an ad for Clinton's book on FR? I join Evening Star in wondering why there is an ad for a book written by a supporter of a third party here. Perhaps it is because of Barr's past rather than his present. I don't know.

I wouldn't call Barr a traitor. I used to think very highly of him but I cannot and will not support anyone who works for the ACLU.

I don't feel that FR should be a KoolAid republican asylum. I just think FR should be principled by rejecting ads from folks as mercurial as Barr.

I can't not believe that Bob Smith could endorse Kerry. Smith was one of the most conservative members in the senate. Sore lower yes, but his stance on abortion, puts him way over kerry

"Bob Barr recently announced that he will be supporting the Libertarian candidate over Bush. However, his book, The Meaning of Is, is still one of several rotating ads on the right panel on several FR pages"

Perhaps because Free Republic is NOT "Republicans Unlimited"?? I thought FR was for CONSERVATIVES of any party?? FWIW, "I" am not a Republican (or Democrat, or Libertarian), but I "am" a conservative.

No offense, but I think you are making way too much of it. Make an adverse business decision (deny Barr advertising space and your corporation money) just because of a disagreement on the constitutionality of the Patriot Act? He's not Karl Marx advocating the overthrow of our society.

If there weren't so much at stake in this election, I suspect that many of us at FR would also be joining Mr. Barr. Let's not punish a fellow conservative because we don't like his vote. His vote is his business and it is one of the freedoms we enjoy in this country.

If we were all honest, most of us here would prefer another viable conservative candidate because there are MANY issues that a lot of us have with the President. HOWEVER, that said, this is not the time to pick nits or send messages. Whatever disappointment we may feel in some of the President's decisions, there isn't a better choice in the entire field and Kerry is simply too dangerous to allow to win because we are being a tad pissy.

A second Bush term could well see major reversals in the policies he supported in his first term, particularly if he wins with a clear majority.

"isnt Barr associated in some way with the ACLU?"

He and Dick Armey have infiltrated that organization, yes.

I thought that, in this thread, I was being consistent with the views of FR's founder.

When you have done as much for your country as Bob Barr, I might pay some attention to your opinion. Unless you continue to hold that only those who agree with the majority of the forum should have any standing here. I'm betting you will, so I won't.
