Bob Smith of New Hampshire calls the Bush Presidency a failure.
Right on all accounts -- and the former "senator" obviously timed this to have maximum impact. Let's just hope Osama's tape trumped Smith's "endorsement."
Unfortunately for most republicans these days if you don't kiss butt and bow to partyline you're considered a "nut" or a "traitor". I find it ironic it's these same people that chant the partyline of conservatism yet keep electing "big government and big spending." We know who the real "nuts" are.
Wasn't he a conservative? Is he the guy who became an Independent for awhile? Maybe I'm thinking of someone else.

You're thinking of the right guy. He's just a big doofus. New England Republicans are a tricky bunch, they're not really Republicans, they're mavericks who are too self-centered to join the gang and be Dems.
Try as you might, you can't defend Bob Smith.
Endorsing Kerry is treasonous to everything the Senator stood for all those years.
Perhaps he needs to take another walk on down to Arlington...

Okay, he is the guy I was thinking he was. Hmmm. He sure doesn't help the image of conservatives with this little move. How the heck can he feel good about endorsing Kerry? If he doesn't like Bush then just SHUT UP! Or he could at least go support the Constitution Party candidate. But Kerry? That's an ego over principle endorsement.
You make a very good point, but I don't see any other so-called conservatives, or even marginal Republicans endorsing Kerry.
And supporting Kerry is going to bring more conservatism into the govt?? Ronald Reagan had large deficits during most of his tenure. Clinton did not (thanks to Newt). Does that make Clinton a Conservative and Reagan a liberal? Pull your head out. On social issues (embryonic stemm cells, abortion, poofer marriage, religious exclusion from public life, gun rights, school accountability) Bush is as conservative as RWR.
On fiscal matters, Bush knew, as did you, that a prescription drug benefit to seniors was inevitable, and therefore coerced a program through that is head and antlers better than what the Demwits were shooting for. His willingness to reform Social Security also shows he has a real pair of rocks.
Also, picking up the SDI ball that Reagan created and fighting the terror masters with courage and conviction puts him into pretty good conservative company. Unless your idea of conservatism is like Pat Buchanan's.
Bob Smith was a good, dedicated Senator. He had a solid Conservative voting record. His statement, endorsing Kerry--which gave his reasons--does not appear in this thread, and I do not have it handy to quote. But that is not the point, anyway.
I do not agree with Bob Smith in endorsing Kerry. I do agree with him in not supporting Bush. I also agree with Mel Gibson's "lemons" remark of the other day.
The choice between the major candidates is pathetic. Bob Smith has elected what he, rightly or wrongly, considers the lesser evil. I cannot vote for the lesser of two evils. But I will stand up for Bob, as a man of principle. The suggestion that he acted out of bitterness, alone, is ridiculous.
I will not vote for either Bush or Kerry. Some of the loud keyboards here can make the most of that, but I seriously doubt if you really want to debate the point. In my opinion, neither Bush nor Kerry would have been morally fit to groom George Washington's horse. They have taken our politics to a new all time low.
I can't condone of Smith's endorsement of Kerry, but then again I wouldn't condone his endorsement of Bush. Personally, I find it hard to believe any conservative would endorse either of the candidates. Both are big government.
