Impact Of Tape On Race Is Uncertain
Washington Post ^ | October 30, 2004 | Dana Milbank with Charles Babington and Jim VandeHei and political researcher Brian Faler

Clearly, the bin Laden cameo in the 2004 presidential race has the potential to cut both ways. Weighing in Bush's favor is that Americans have typically rallied around the president when they have felt threatened, and bin Laden's tape is menacing. Also, the fact that bin Laden was making his presence known through a videotape rather than through a Madrid-style attack could be seen as evidence that Bush had done his job of protecting the public.

.....This time, it was Kerry's side urging television networks to be cautious in playing the tape.

"If you've got Osama back on the scene talking about 9/11 but not making an attack, it could be the best of both worlds" for Bush, said Republican strategist Jeff Bell. "It's good for Bush, the fact that [bin Laden] hasn't been able to attack, except for verbally."

Kerry aides appeared visibly alarmed aboard the candidate's plane as they planned a response to the tape's airing. One prominent Democrat speculated that for swing voters who have not followed the election closely, bin Laden's reappearance may well boost Bush.

.... the bin Laden appearance may reinforce some of Kerry's arguments. Bin Laden practically quoted Kerry when he said "Bush is still deceiving you and hiding the truth from you," and he seemed to be familiar with the liberal filmmaker Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11" and its mockery of Bush for reading "My Pet Goat" with children while the World Trade Center towers burned....

....Mike McCurry appeared unusually somber as he told reporters that the candidate would proceed with the campaign as if the tape had not appeared. "It's very important for us to move forward. ...

Women have a instinctive sense to gravitate to a STRONG MAN.
In times of uncertanty, women naturally want a strong man to protect them.

Newbie?

cccellar
Since Jan 10, 2003

How long does it take to lose 'newbie' status?
I'm even more of a newbie than cccellar and I can't even give my opinion of the polls or I wouldn't ever make it to 'oldbie.'

"A state like New Jersey could tip Bush's way just because of their proximity to 9/11."

We better swing to Bush. If kerry gets in I'm outta here. Been looking for a reason for a long time. Hubby says "don't run" but I say that's ok if your main guy is doing the right thing, you stay no matter what. But with a commie traitor like JFK, now way am I gonna sit here and wait to get blown up by the terrorist slime who make the state of New Jersey their home away from home.

And lest anyone think I'm exagerrating, I lived DIRECTLY across the street from the first WTC bomber, the dope who went back for the van deposit. This is what it's like in "Stupid New Joisey". Now, if we grown a brain, and vote BUSH! then I might hang around for a while.

sent this to sully, some bloggers and a few media types:

Andrew Sullivan,

You wrote: “I have a feeling that this will tip the election decisively toward the incumbent. A few hours ago, I thought Kerry was headed for victory. Now I think the opposite. I also have a sinking feeling that that was entirely bin Laden's objective.” No you don’t.

Of course, Bill O’Reilly (or perhaps Scarborough, but in any event a talking head predisposed to support Bush but wishing to appear evenhanded) offered this same take. Propounding such a theory could in some cases be an attempt to appear savvy but for others it is a calculated effort to suggest that ‘a vote for Kerry is to deny bin Laden’s objective.’

It is clear from Bin Laden and Saddam’s candid admissions during the Bush term that, after decades of counterexample, terrorists will need to be taught again and again that Americans can be resolute. Bush has prevented in the U.S. the means by which Bin Laden achieved victory in Spain. Usama must now resort to the Hail Mary of regurgitating the arguments with which Michael Moore has stirred the self-loathing of half our population. Bin Laden senses our weakness but exploits it as clumsily as ever.

It is you Kerry supporters who are too clever in assailing our wartime President and whose real aims must be exposed.

BUSH/CHENEY champaign

That's what they'll be poppin' the corks off of on Tuesday night, not a french brand. Really, whoever made that Bush ketchup, how about some Bush bubbly?
