Justice Sandra Day O'Connor yesterday extolled the growing role of international law in U.S. courts, saying judges would be negligent if they disregarded its importance in a post-September 11 world of heightened tensions.
In a 15-minute speech at Georgetown law school, Justice O'Connor made no mention of the health of Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist, 80, who was hospitalized this week for thyroid cancer and is expected to return to work Monday.
Justice O'Connor said the Supreme Court is increasingly taking cases that demand a better understanding of foreign legal systems. A recent example was last term's terror cases involving the U.S. detention of foreign-born detainees at U.S. Naval Base Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, she said.
"International law is no longer a specialty. ... It is vital if judges are to faithfully discharge their duties," Justice O'Connor told attendees at a ceremony dedicating Georgetown's new international law center.
"Since September 11, 2001, we're reminded some nations don't have the rule of law or [know] that it's the key to liberty," she said. Later this term, the Supreme Court will decide the constitutionality of executing juvenile killers. The case has attracted wide interest overseas, with many foreign nations filing briefs pointing to international human rights norms as a justification for outlawing the practice.
Justice O'Connor, who is expected to be a pivotal vote, didn't mention the case, but said recognizing international law could foster more civilized societies in the United States and abroad.
BTTT!!!!!!!
This is proof that there needs to be an upper age limit for Supreme Court Judges.
She wants to dilute our Constitution by stirring in European Court precedent.
she is attacking the very foundation of our Republic.
Regards,
Ive been calling for her impeachment for the last two years when she first starting making her rulings based on international law.But have been ridiculed and told to shut up for the last two years because by god she was apointed by one of our lords nad savoirs ronald reagan and to impeach her would taint ronnies legacy. One of the things the ""conservatives"" on freerepublic better realise and better realise very very quickly i s that international law almost exclusivley bans all firearms of any caliber. Hell there was a story posted on freerepublic this summer about a group of german men that are faceing 12 years in prison in germany becasue they were showing off a potato(E?) :-) gun to thier friends and the cops saw it to.So I really dont give a tinkers damn whether it makes rons legacy look bad we have to impeach at least 5 members of the supreme court starting with good ole sandy day.
Can We? Has that ever been done?
...and give her vacant seat to respected jurist MIGUEL ESTRADA ???...That way she can lunch with her friends whenever she wants...
"How can our nation survive?"
It didn't.
It doesn't get any worst, and their doing it without a shot being fired!!!
There are two things YOU CAN DO to stop the stampede to international control of business and government in our country:
1)
Call and e-mail the Supreme Court with your concern about the application of law in our country. Tell them of your serious concern about superceding our Constitution with decisions made by foreign courts:
E-mail: gpoaccess@gpo.gov
Telephone: (888) 293-6498
2)
Begin the distribution of the Congressional Petition below seeking the removal of Justice O'Connor from the Supreme Court:
Whereas, Article VI, Clause 2 of the Constitution holds: This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States which shall be made in Pursuance thereof; and all Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be the supreme Law of the Land; and the Judges in every State shall be bound thereby, any Thing in the Constitution or Laws of any State to the Contrary notwithstanding.; and
Whereas, Article VI, Clause 3 of the Constitution holds: The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; and
Whereas, Article III, Section 1 of the Constitution of the United States charges members of the Supreme Court shall only ....hold their offices during good behaviour....; and
Whereas, Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor did willfully and publicly rescind her oath of office made to the people of these united States of America, and
Whereas, Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor did willfully and wrongfully publicly promote an abrogation of the Constitution of these united States of America by declaring the application of foreign government law and foreign court decisions as superior to supreme law of our country, as well as national, state, regional and local court decisions, statutes and ordinances; and
Whereas, it is unfair to Justice OConnor and the American people to unduly delay a resolution of the charge of breaching her oath of office and her attempt to subvert the rule of law in these united States of America; and
Whereas, only in the context of an official House Judiciary Committee Impeachment Investigation can we find out whether impeachment Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day OConnor may be legally warranted.
Therefore, we, the undersigned urge you, Representative
_______________________________________________________ to sponsor a House Resolution to launch an official inquiry to determine whether impeachment shall be initiated with respect to Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day OConnor.

Memo to Supreme Court: DON'T TREAD ON ME!
Bump for 49
thanks.
Your point?
BTTT
The court has way too much power and leeway, the US Constitution has provisions in it which can limit its scope and authority which has not been done because congress has no "nerve" and don't want to deal with the issues. It's time to get after our congressmen to put the SCOTUS in its place which can be done when congress decides to do it.
Wow...she never mentioned the Constitution once in that entire article.
This is just one of many reasons Bush must win.
That wench needs to go.
BTTT!!!!!!!
