Potentially Bad (Snowy) Election Day Weather in NM
10/29/04 | austinrepub

Initial weather forecasts for Monday night and Tuesday show a reasonable chance of snow showers and snow for eastern New Mexico, which is the most Republican region of the state. Hopefully this will not be a repeat of 2000, when a snowstorm hit this region on election day, and likely prevented 366 Bush voters from getting to the polls.

Snow. In east New Mexico.

Erm, maybe I don't understand the climate over there as well as I should, but... that seems like a very, very unlikely possibility.

I searched the Weather Channel for weather for SouthWEST NM, which I understand is the most Republican area of the State and they show Sunny, Monday and Tuesday.

They get snow there. As does Arizona. The Republicans better get together and get some drivers and alternative transportation just in case to get people to the polls!

My family lives in Portales, and I never remember it snowing before Thanksgiving. As for rain well you can just forget it. This used to be the peanut capitol of the world, until it all blew a way.

Texans tend to have 4-wheel drive vehicles, and are just across the border. Most NM GOP voters are in Eastern NM anyway........anyone? anyone?

That's why Pres. Bush made campaign stops in Hobbs and Alamogordo in October. REpublicans felt they didn't get enough of their base out in 2000. My nephew and his wife two small children got up at 3:45am in Hobbs to see W and said it was a great experience.

Probably true, but there's been a lot of talk about a really bad winter this year all around the country.

If the snow covers Bernallilo County and whatever one Santa Fe is in, then this good, not bad news

at least we are having a record pre-voting turnout on the eastside. Maybe we learned from 2000.
Chaves county has over 33% of the registered voters already having voted

Most of New Mexico gets snow, I believe. Even the southern part. They have Rocky Mountains as well.

You never heard of Cloudcroft or Ruidoso skiing?

Yep, you don't understand the climate in NM. It snowed here last night. I live in northwest NM and we are at 6700 feet. We usually get a lot of snow. The eastern part of the state usually gets more than we do. It's not uncommon for people to think we are in the desert like Arizona is. :)
