The following came from a poster on the Belmont Club, http://belmontclub.blogspot.com/2004/10/rdx-part-2-michael-totten-at.html . It's pretty scary stuff. I hope this guy's wrong:

"The NYT story is NOT the October surprise. It is the set-up to the October surprise.

NO ... I do not impute nor do I believe there is a conspiracy afoot. I believe that the NYT is merely doing what was entirely predictable, as has ElBaradei.

JFK has in large part based his campaign on the hopes for a Madrid type reckoning. By insincerely and persistently harping on W's alleged failure and purported incompetence in protecting the homeland, JFK has day after day pointed to a powerful factor favoring W's re-election: no further attacks after 9-11. Anybody with an ounce of sense would otherwise be discretely quiet on the matter, even knowing that W cannot tempt fate by pointing to this fact.

This is especially so, because anyone who is not affirmatively amoral would understand the theme would be understood by jihad as inviting an attack.

Why continually point to this fact favorable to W? Especially when it is readily understood as an invitation to attack? Because JFK expects and is inviting a Madrid attack, to vindicate his criticism of W, and to shape the aftermath in his favor.

The question has been how JFK's "I told you so" would take shape. In the aftermath of tragedy, no one wants to appear to take advantage. The myrmidons somehow would be set loose in some fashion ... making sure no one missed the point that W was at fault ... seemed to be the way it had to go.

But here we have the perfect set-up, a much better tact: and not a conspiracy at all, just a serendipity of malicious minds, all on the same wave-length, all understanding the power of the big payoff, all anticipating and hoping for the jihadis to do what they devoutly desire and regard as the principal good, the defeat of George Bush.

All things being equal, no American gives a rat's posterior about the missing explosives, at least not in terms of how he will vote. Nor does the "bungling Bush" trope have any resonance anymore, standing alone.

But ElBaradei understands, and the NYT understands, that the image of a bungling George Bush allowing "devastating" explosives to escape thru sheer incompetence, is the perfect prelude to the devastating use of explosives in America, mere days before the election. And personally, I would not be at all surprised if the myrmidons actually attempt to identify the explosives as HMX and RDX.

Forget about the truth or logic of the matter. The only "reality" as far as Kerry or ElBaradei or the NYT is concerned, is that an incompetent moron allowed devastating explosives to become available under circumstances where the incompetent moron was too stupid to protect our homeland. The devastating jihadi attack, answering the r.s.v.p. of their fellow haters, would neatly tie together major, endlessly reiterated themes of the Kerry campaign, with no time at all to formulate a rational answer.

This story is despicable and heartless, but not as a clumsy bit of propaganda. It reveals the souless hatred of the left, who hope for and invite murder. It gets no more sophisticated than the only commandment they honor: the ends justify any means."

Does the GOP have an october surprise??

Could AlQaQaa-gate be a preemption from the Kerry camp, knowing that Bush's October surprise will be irrefutable evidence of massive caches of WMDs. Afterall, Kerry has now gone on record that there were high tech exposives found before they disappeared.

How about Kerry's comment in the first debate about the cache of weapons which were taken and being used against our military? Did Kerry know something was in the works (even though wrong) to be used as an embarrassment for President Bush?

I'll always remember Clinton's "Secretary of Defense," Bill Cohen - at a Senate or House hearing - holding up a small, clear plastic bag (filled with sugar, or something) and saying that much WMD could kill many. So, Kerry thinks it was possible for some bandits to pilfer 380 tons of weaponry, while our convoys are going by and our air surveillance is there - and yet he's sure there is not a vial of WMD somewhere. Oh yeah, I forgot how smart he is.

The way my mom said it was exactly how you typed it, including the emphasis on the word "WILL". She even emphasized the word with the fingerpoint that struck fear into the eyes of my brother, sister and I. LOL! :)

I thought about this from the moment we realized it was missing as soon as our troops got there. Where did it go?

Saddam had his buddies the French stall long enough for a Caravan to go into the Bekka Valley..

Dr. Kay mentioned that caravan in his report.

We know there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. The WORLD knew there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. This is only the tip of the iceberg.

It is only proof that things that were there one day.. disappeared the next.

Same goes for the other WMD's.

President Bush is vindicated. If 380,000 TONS is missing, how simple is it to remove smaller even more potent and deadly WMD's?

You are right--it is incorrect to say it is no big deal. My understanding is that these are explosives that can be used to trigger nuclear devices, which is why the UN had it sealed.
