XXXXX DRUDGE REPORT XXXXX MON OCT 25 2004 22:45:05 ET XXXXX

NBCNEWS: CACHE OF EXPLOSIVES VANISHED FROM SITE IN IRAQ BEFORE TROOPS ARRIVED...

The NYTIMES urgently reported on Monday in an apprent October Surprise: The Iraqi interim government and the U.N. nuclear agency have warned the United States that nearly 380 tons of powerful conventional explosives are now missing from one of Iraq's most sensitive former military installations.

[The source behind the NYT story first went to CBSNEWS' 60 MINUTES last Wednesday, but the beleaguered network wasn't able to get the piece on the air as fast as the newspaper could print. Executive producer Jeff Fager hoped to break the story during a high-impact election eve broadcast of 60 MINS on October 31.]

NBC HAD to do report this....The Repubs knew they had an embedded reporter....I was thinking that Rove would have let the media play with this for a couple of days and then bring out the fact of the NBC embedded reporter...would have also brought pie in the face to NBC...so I think NBC undercut the result by going public so soon...

NBC is the only "big three" broadcaster left that hasn't been outed publically as blatantly biased. They 'fessed up that they had exculpatory evidence rather than go through what CBS and ABC has been going through at the hands of the pajamadeen / blogsphere.

In June 2004, Hewitt will relinquish his executive producer post to Jeff Fager, currently the executive producer of 60 Minutes II

Fager was born and raised in Mass and worked for the Boston Globe. Prior to joining 60 Minutes, he was Dan Rather's producer.

Howlin, what I find most disturbing is the new discovery that 60 Minutes planned to air this on election eve. Unfortunately this was added after many read the story yesterday and may not get the play it deserves.

This is a very lame October Surprise. Lame. No just give us those papers that show Kerry had a dishonrable discharge and NOW were talkin'...

I think the October suprise will come the Thursday before the election, that way the media is talking about it through the weekend and on Monday as well.

I think we're missing something even bigger about the timing on this. This story was the big, last minute, October surprise that was to be coordinated between 60 Minutes, the New York Times and probably the Washington Post and Boston Globe, all hitting Sunday Night through Monday morning, just in time for Election Day.

Just like in 2000 there would be enough time to hurt Bush but not enough time for Team Bush to strike back. But the New York Times broke the story a full week early. Why?

Notice that the sKerry campaign had their talking points ready and pushed this story to the top of the news cycle yesterday. This story broke when it did because the Demwits had to do something to keep the "Kerry Lied About Meeting with the Security Council" story from getting legs. The UN story is big and they realized that unless they capture the new cycle with a big story of their own the talk this week would all be about Kerry being more of a compulsive liar than Gore (hard to believe, but true).

They're going to try to milk this for all it's worth, but the effect is going to be much more muted than expected. That's OK with them, however, since it effectively shut out the Kerry/UN/Lie story from the news cycle entirely.

I am trying to think who shopped this around.

Joe Wilson? Hans Blix?

Michael Moore. He's a reliable source, right?

"In Nazi Germany, at first, the Nazi Party took away the right of other parties to be heard. They shouted down opposition with shrill lies. They tore down the campaign signs of opposing candidates, leaving only Hitler and his supporters. Then, after the election, they took over the courts and abolished the Weimar democratic government, imposing the will of a few hundred unelected judges and Nazi officials over the will of millions of Germans."

The DNC = Fascism

Now we know why they want to remove the second amendment from the constitution.

I just heard Matt Lauer and Tim Russert talking about the missing explosives, and they didn't say a THING about it being gone before we got there. HOWEVER, I'd just turned to NBC after watching Fox and Friends, and they DID talk about it having been missing.

How bizarre!

Some liberal media talking heads and producers would look straight into the TV camera and swear that the sun rises in the West and sets in the East if they believed that it would hurt Bush.

They are nothing more than Democrat Party hacks.

As was apparent today when Kerry again hammered away at Bush's incompetence in not protecting the site. After the sound bite, John Scott of Foxnews simply said that there's some dispute as to whether Kerry's claim are correct. Good grief NBC had an embedded reporter present but it's still not enough!

Noticed that this morning - Kerry looked like an idiot. Fox News played the sound bite of his beating this one into the ground, then went to the report that the story is false, noting that Kerry was continuing to bellow about this AFTER the NBC story came out.

I hope he yells about it all day long.

Those mf-ers over at CBS...damn, I'm doing a slow burn over this.

If Bush gets re-elected, zero access for CBS. Treat them like dirt.

Big Russ should be ashamed to have such a partisan weakling for a son. My Mom bought me that book for my birthday this year because we lost my Dad a few years ago; I've yet to read it, and only because I have ZERO respect for Tim Russert. I'm sure Big Russ has more 'integrity, integrity, integrity' in his pinkie than his corrupted son has had in his entire life.

If you've ever wondered why Tim Russert gets so passionate when he's questioning presidents and politicians about values and character and the truth, he'll tell you it comes from the man he calls "Big Russ." They say you can't go home again. In some ways, Tim Russert never left the town, the times, the teachers in the place he still thinks of as home. Read an excerpt of his book, "Big Russ and Me," below:

But...but...if John Kerry had his way, we wouldn't have been in Iraq in the first place. The reason that we were too slow to get to the weapons was because we were too busy trying to pass the "global test" for the Iraq invasion in the UN.
