The NYTIMES urgently reported on Monday in an apprent October Surprise: The Iraqi interim government and the U.N. nuclear agency have warned the United States that nearly 380 tons of powerful conventional explosives are now missing from one of Iraq's most sensitive former military installations.
[The source behind the NYT story first went to CBSNEWS' 60 MINUTES last Wednesday, but the beleaguered network wasn't able to get the piece on the air as fast as the newspaper could print. Executive producer Jeff Fager hoped to break the story during a high-impact election eve broadcast of 60 MINS on October 31.]

From what I heard there was a CBS and NTY reporter in Baghdad that was working on this story.
From the point of view that 60 Minutes was going to break this Sunday night, I think this WAS the RATS' October Surprise. With only one day left before the election, the GOP would have had trouble refuting it.
Problem is(for the RATS), it's such a flimsy story that they flubbed the timing and it was quickly debunked.

Would it be a good idea for BC04 to turn this into a joke on CBS? Yell loud and clear that the story has been debunked, and then tack on a line like: "We knew it was a false attack when 60 Minutes got hot on the trail!". Something like that.

That was my first thought. With Kerry so aligned with the UN and Clinton wanting to head it up, I can see them doing ANYTHING to remove President Bush.
With Bush out, the oil-for-food scandal can be brushed off with some superficial report.
This is a serious battle for the United States of America AND Israel. You can almost hear the devil roaring.
