Democratic Vice Presidential candidate John Edwards came to town yesterday, visited Allen Temple A.M.E., and had Rev. Donald Jordan say this:
"I know he is going to be president of the United States," Rev. Donald Jordan told a cheering capacity congregation of 1,200. "The Republicans have no one who can compare to him. I ask your support of him."

Aren't there some issues of the church's tax-free status here? Also, where's the ACLU screaming about the separation of church and state?
Of course, it sounds like this church believes in the separation of church and brain.
Nothing to see here - move along, now...
Thank God!
A copy of this needs to be sent to this church along with a tax notice! Someone please alert the I.R.S.
> "The Republicans have no one who can compare to him.
Thank God for that.
Isn't this a case for the FEC?
Interestingly, it isn't only Kerry who is being endorsed from the black pulpit. Someone told me yesterday that a black Christian he works with has been instructed by his minister that his parishioners should vote for Bush/Cheney. This man is a democrat and feels uncomfortable with it, but is going to follow the lead of his minister. While I don't like the idea of ministers telling their congregation who to vote for, I hope that black churches which do endorse a candidate follow this man's lead.
He is right about one thing. Republicans have NO ONE who could compare with Kerry/Edwards...Thank God..
No, for the IRS.
That's okay. They just lost their tax-exempt status. Plus, their guy is going to lose.
A church lost its tax free exemption when its pastor urged people to vote against Clinton in 92. His statement came in the form of a published advertisement, which one would normally consider to be nothing but a personal opinion protected by the First Amendment, but for the fact that he identified himself as a pastor. Seems like making the statement from the pulpit is even more problematic.
Personally, I am in favor of repealing that law. The black churches ignore it anyway, and there are no repercussions. I don't see why the other churches should be constrained.
I always thought that churches could not preach politics. Doesn't violate their tax free status, or something?
Ping
Not a damn thing will happen, and everybody knows it. Laws only apply to white Republicans.
Of course they ignore it...with the race discrimmination card in your back pocket, ANYTHING is possible; even murder! (i.e. OJ, various crap rap "artists", etc.)
"I know he is going to be president of the United States," Rev. Donald Jordan told a cheering capacity congregation of 1,200.
In your dreams.
Ezekiel 13:9 My hand will be against the prophets who see false visions and utter lying divinations. They will not belong to the council of my people or be listed in the records of the house of Israel, nor will they enter the land of Israel. Then you will know that I am the Sovereign LORD .
