As in many past elections, Americans are closely divided over who should be the next president. It's not a clear-cut case of one candidate being far superior to the other. Yet history is not made by those who stand on the sidelines and wring their hands. The people must choose on Nov. 2, and The Courant recommends George W. Bush over John F. Kerry.

This Hartford Courant endorsement is the other bookend of the Austin Statesman American.
Just . . . . . wow.
"Mr. Kerry's insistence that he can accomplish his four-point plan faster and better than Mr. Bush is not persuasive. Although Mr. Kerry may be a more sympathetic figure in Europe and other regions traditionally friendly to the United States, that doesn't mean he can talk foreign governments into committing troops and treasure to Iraq in the quantities needed to supplant Americans.
We agree with the Democratic nominee on some key issues. Like him, we favor abortion rights, gun control, strong environmental protection and the provision of health care coverage to the millions without it.
Yet opinions without the leadership ability to bring them to fruition matter little. Mr. Kerry has been in the Senate for 19 years and has passed few if any major pieces of legislation bearing his name. He is a loner. He has not developed a strong bipartisan network in the upper chamber. There's not much evidence to suggest that the Democratic nominee would as president have the clout and discipline needed to guide his agenda through a sharply divided Congress, regardless of its merits.
Further, it's doubtful that taxpayers could afford the cost of some of Mr. Kerry's ideas."
bump....this is just one of the best endorsements I have read. Intelligent, sharp....very well done.
They don't agree with Bush on everything, but, they even give him domestic props. Well done piece.
Perhaps cultural LIBERALS are starting to think
"Gee, maybe Gay Marriage, getting sex ed in schools, and socialized medicine can wait while we let a REAL LEADER take on and finish the global terrorist threat. My life is a bit more important than changing social conventions."
The - "Keep Bush because of terrorism" - that was more or less the take of the Austin American Statemen (aka Unamerican spacemen). "Rumsfeld and Wolfowitz have to go" they said. And their 'endorsement' had more whines than praises ... But Bush can stay, because turning him out would send the wrong signal to terrorists, and Bush's leadership is superior to Kerry's.
AMAZING.
If voters listen, then the country will deliver a blowout victory for Bush, ensuring that TERRORISTS HEAR LOUD AND CLEAR THAT WE WILL NOT BE DETERRED, AND THEY WILL BE DEFEATED.
What a comment from CT!:
"Post-attack, however, Americans couldn't have asked more of the president. His strong, calm leadership soothed a shattered and uncertain people."
And Christians from all over this country should take heart and get back into our society. Be the salt.
I am shocked that liberal rag sheet has endorsed Bush. Every columnist save one (Laurence Cohen), hates Bush. The whole paper is edited in an anti-Iraq war fashion. Tou got to read this article written today by Helen Ubinas(the racism is everywhere columnist). Her amazement at this is palpable.http://www.ctnow.com/hc-ubinas1024.artoct24,1,1792293.story?coll=hc-big-headlines-breaking
This is not "shocking", the Courant endorsed Bush in 2000 and CT is after all, a state that lost many citizens to the islamofascists on 9/11.
I am just in shock. Some of these libs heard that "globalism talk" folks. They know Kerry up there, they know he means it and they are scared to death. Even Dems have families and want thier kids to have a country in the future. They know Kerry cannot handle what lies ahead. Bush may not take the state but this is a very telling.
Cultural and Liberal seems like a contradiction of terms. Guess the Kool-aid didn't get to them huh?
This dovetails with bush being up 1 in UCONN poll (if true)
One HUGE reason rational connecticut residents may end up voting AGAINST Kerry - He is a THREAT to their JOBS
1 - Defense contractors number 1 in employment - United Technologies (HQ, Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Engines, Hamilton Sunstrand, Sikorsky Helicopters, Norden Systems); Electric Boat; General Electric; Kaman Helicopters; Groton Naval Shipyard; plus all the subcontracting base for these companies - Even Dodd has to be a hawk in terms of defense spending
2 - Insurance companies probably still #2 employer (Travelers, Aetna, Cigna.......) - Nationalize healthcare is not in CT's best interest....
Thanks for the info and welcome to Free Republic!
BTTT
And it was a very good editiorial. Made a very good case why we should not switch leaders at this time. Worth a read.
We are not supposed to link directly but you can get to it here.
Just one extra click.
I'm shocked. I lived in Hartford and a couple of surrounding towns for 10 years.
I wonder if Colin McEnroe knows.
Unless you're extremely gifted for your age, you were probably alive when they endorsed W in 2000...
Are ewe series?
