AHA!! the 17,000 figure was from the organizers, not the press. Here is this from the morning ABQ Journal story:

With President Bush returning today to New Mexico— a state considered one of 10 or 11 battleground states nationally in the Nov. 2 election— Kerry spoke to a big crowd in a high school football stadium called "The Field of Dreams." The crowd appeared to number at least 10,000, and organizers said there were 17,000 people.

I will be attending the Bush rally in Iowa on Monday.

There will be 11,000 people in attendance, and some of us "Firefighters for Bush" are hoping for a photo-op.
(I know..."good luck!")

I'll let everyone know how it went, and hopefully post pictures.

From this thread:

New Mason Dixon poll for New Mexico: Bush 49, Kerry 44

Democrats 332 (53%)
Republicans 231 (37%)
Independents 62 (10%)
Holy Cow look at that internal !

A goodly number of old-line conservative Democrats (both Anglo and Hispanic) are voting for Bush. The trick is keep the younger ones from buying into the Kerry hype.

One of the local TV stations showed both the Kerry speech and the Notre Dame football game on split screen. The TV news people estimated the crowd at "several thousand." (It was hard to tell because they did not show many wide angle shots of the crowd.)

What struck me about Kerry's speech (aside from his shameless pandering and prevaricating) was how lackluster it was. At this point in the campaign, I am sure the candidates exhausted, and in Kerry's case it showed. The joke he told about Haliburton didn't get much of a response, and he did not seem to expect much. The various dignitaries on stage with him—including Governor Richardson and Senator Bingaman—applauded at the right times, but not with any great enthusiasm. My impression is that everyone is looking forward for this thing to end.

Was Gary King, the carpet-bagger Dem candidate for District 2, on stage? I haven't seen any mention of him or pictures with him and Kerry together. OTOH, Richardson was always very buddy-buddy with Scarey K in the picture I've seen.

I don't know what King looks like, so I cannot say.

I didn't see King in any of the coverage I watched. I think he will lose handily against Pearce. The King name won't carry him. (I will admit Bruce was a likeable guy.)

Gary's a likeable guy too; I knew him in a former life. Unfortunately, he's cast his lot with the far left libs and envirowackos. Living in Stanley and Santa Fe colors your view of the world pink.

BTW, two weeks ago a Pearce worker said he was up by 17 or so. With all the SE NM Bush voters trying to keep NM in the Red column, I suspect Steve will benefit from that.

I met Gary briefly when he was on the board of the Moriarty Schools. I like Bruce, he came to the opening of my wife's school in Edgewood after he was out of office. Nothing in it for him, he was just being neighborly.
