The Soviet Union might still exist and Saddam Hussein might control the Persian Gulf and possess nuclear weapons had Democrat John Kerry been president when the United States faced those regimes, Vice President Dick Cheney said Saturday.
"I think it's a good thing that he wasn't in charge," Cheney said.
Kerry asserted Friday that had he been president during the war in Afghanistan, terrorist leader Osama bin Laden would be in captivity or dead. The Democratic nominee has long criticized President Bush for abandoning the pursuit of the alleged mastermind of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks so that U.S. forces could invade Iraq and topple Saddam.
Contending that the Massachusetts senator was "claiming that the world would be a whole lot better if he had been president," Cheney suggested to supporters at a rally that he believed the world would be far worse off.
"Let's go back to the 1970s when John Kerry was saying that we should only deploy U.S. troops under the authority of the United Nations," the vice president said, citing a statement Kerry made in 1970 after returning from Vietnam service. "One way the world might look if he had been in charge is, we would have ceded our right to defend ourselves to the United Nations."
Cheney said Kerry campaigned for the Senate on a platform of opposing major weapons systems that, during the Reagan administration, helped win the Cold War. "So if John Kerry had been in charge, maybe the Soviet Union would still be in business," the vice president said.
Kerry voted against going to war in the Persian Gulf in 1991 after Saddam had invaded Kuwait. "So if John Kerry had been in charge, Saddam might well control the Persian Gulf today," Cheney said.

If it wasn't for both Reagan and the Iron Lady the Soviet Union may not have received its final death knell. They ignored the long haired freaky people to our benefit.
This is awesome. The Republicans really have nail Kerry on his record. The way Cheney puts it is very simple for people to see and it's not speculation or second guessing. They are using Kerry's votes against him to paint a picture of a passivist.
If JFK had been president during those crisis we would be an occupied country speaking Russian. All 25 million of us.
Likely my butt. We would be calling you comrade tailgunner.
Kerry has no objection to Communism, if you don't believe it, read his statement to congress. He praises that system, and calls ours the evil empire.
George W. Bush will win reelection by a margin of at least ten per cent
Hard to see how anybody could argue Cheney's statement.
Of course, that's true for a scenario involving a lot of people who might have been in charge (imagine Jimmy Carter, there's a nightmare scenario). I personally would go further and say that we might be speaking Russian by now if Kerry were in charge.
Kerry considers communism to be just another "ism", no better or worse than democracy/capitalism. Kerry's ammoralism explains his behavior quite well.
As soon as John Kerry had engineered his early trip home from the war, he set out to assist the Soviet and North Vietnamese enemies. He repeated the "war crimes" disinformation spun out by the Soviet Secret Police (KGB) and pumped to the U.S. "anti-war" movement. He and his leftist cohort dreamed up the nastiest lies they could think of about America and our armed forces. Kerry even went to Paris to meet with the Communist "peace" delegation -- and urged this country to accede to their complete list of demands, that is, surrender in every detail to the Communists.
Kerry kept right on supporting Communist regimes -- for instance, in Nicaragua, in Vietnam, in Cuba, and in trying to reimpose the Marxist ruler in Haiti. Does anyone recall what role he may have had in that bizarre Clinton / Albright business of giving enriched uranium to North Korea, the world's nastiest communist state?
John Kerry would have done nothing about the Soviets except lick their boots and send them nuclear secrets.

It's doubtful whether the Soviet Union would have fallen unless Reagan had worked closely with the Pope and Lech Walensa. Democrat union leaders in the AFL-CIO also helped. And the CIA could be counted on to help out.
Things have changed enormously since then. The idea of Kerry working closely with Pope JP II or with Solidarity is laughable. He was on the other side.
Cheney is right.

Absolutely.
If it were up to any Demo Rat president (Kennedy, Johnson, Carter, Clinton) the Soviet Union would still exist. And if any Demo Rat were in the White House on 911, Saddam Hussein would still be engaged in mass murder and torture, the Taliban would still be running Afghanistan, and we would have had many more terrorist attacks here in the United States. Iraq by now would have supplied WMD to terrorists attacking us.
The soviet union tore down the wall, before they didn't tear it down.
The problems we have now is a perfect example of why traitors should be tried and subject to prison and appropriate sentences.
Wrong wall, at the wrong place, at the wrong time.
