October 23, 2004--Republican Richard Burr is gaining ground in the race to replace John Edwards as North Carolina's next U.S. Senator.
The latest Rasmussen Reports survey shows Burr with 49% of the vote and Democrat Erskine Bowles with 45%. Burr leads by nine points among men and the candidates are tied among women.
The survey of 500 Likely Voters was conducted Monday, October 20, 2004. Our previous survey, conducted two weeks earlier found Burr leading by just two percentage points, 47% to 45%.
Just 47% of North Carolina voters now have a favorable opinion of Bowles. That's down from 53% in the earlier survey. Fifty-four percent (54%) have a favorable opinion of Burr, unchanged over the past two weeks.
During the summer, most polls showed Bowles with a double-digit lead. In the fall, Burr's advertising campaign highlighted Bowles' working relationship with former President Bill Clinton.
Any state that would elect a Tinkerbell like Edwards in the first place...
Sounds great. I'll bet Bowles wishes he'd never heard the name Clinton. That is what is killing him.
I knew I was going to like this state once I gave it a chance!
:-)
Ping!
Richard Burr is a political genius.

Now, now!! We're all entitled to one mistake. But JUST one.
It must be irksome to lose a lead like that.
Hehehehehe...it's good to see this polling data. I hang with too many Chapel Hill types, and I have been worrying a lot about Burr....
That would be great if Irksome Bowels lost. These Clinton hacks are like mildew - they keep spreading if not controlled regularly.
Great news! Burr appears to have gotten a boost from the tobacco buyout. As of right now, he takes the cake as far as the Republican Senate candidate running the best campaign. Burr was trailing for months (mainly due to Bowles' name ID advantage built up from 2002), but once he started making his push he never let up and has taken control of this race.
You think the voters have forgotten about the whole killing of Hamilton thing?
LOL! Bet it is especially irksome to the bowels...
Notice that Bowles was locked in at around 45% this whole time? It was the same amount he received two years ago aginst Liddy Dole. Bowles has little appeal outside the Dem base.
Looks like my fellow Tar Heels are coming through!
As a Charlottean (that works better than Charlottan), I can say that Burr's ads are very effective. He has joined Bowles to Clinton's hip (ewww!), and that is anathema to most of us here. He also did well in the debate. All in all, a well-run campaign. Praying that he can now close it out.
That's exactly what is going to cost Bowles the race if he loses. Burr just has to keep Clinton's & Bowles pictured
together until Tuesday week.
Burr is not the Senator I would prefer but he will get my vote.
I know Burr would pull ahead. Liddy Dole has been running ads for Burr .She whipped Erkin Bowels A$$ here last time. That will make him a 2 time loser. LMAO!!
I just checked RealClearPolitics and their poll tracking shows Burr was traling by 9 or 10 points as recently as late September. Bowles was at 49 or 50 percent. The Clinton ads knocked him back to earth and Burr has been shoring up his Republican base ever since. I read somewhere the other day that between July and September, North Carolina had the most expensive Senate race in the country. Something like a combined $12 million dollars spent in 90 days.
... and sending Montgomery Clift to the electric chair ...
I voted for Burr. If he beats Bowels, that will be a double stroke against Edwards.
