On Election Day, voters will be protected from campaign pressures by a 50-foot cone, an invisible barrier that campaign workers cannot breach. Not so for early voters.
While the Voter's Bill of Rights in state law says they have a right to "vote free from coercion or intimidation by elections officers or any other person," a glitch in the newer early voting law does not include the same 50-foot guarantee.
As a result, with early voting taking place in busy public places like City Halls and libraries, voters are voicing complaints of being blocked by political mobs, or being singled out for their political views. Others say they have been grabbed, screamed at and cursed by political partisans of all stripes.
Republican Rep. Tom Feeney of Oviedo said the antagonizers are "Kerry thugs" out to harass Bush voters.
"If you ask me whether I believe there is an organized effort to intimidate Republican voters, the answer is absolutely yes," said Feeney.
The Republican Party is calling on the secretary of state's office for help, asking that early voting rules be clarified.
The secretary of state's office has not yet responded.
"Significant numbers of people have already been deterred from voting," wrote Republican Party Chairwoman Carole Jean Jordan to Secretary of State Glenda Hood, "and this will continue until corrective measures are taken."

If the RATS are engaging in voter intimidation, then where are those UN election monitors or better yet where's Jimmy Carter? Don't these dudes care about election integrity?
Yeah, all stripes -- Rat, Donkey, and Weasel.
oops, I posted to fast.. what I meant to say is : You can forget all chatter about TV pundits and past scandals if the problem of voters being bullied at the polling place is not addressed. Elderly voters will be dissuaded from showing up if they hear reports of thugs at the polling place. The DNC should be called on to repudiate thuggery. If they do not it will make clear to swing voters who they are dealing with.
I remember voting in Pittsburgh PA 30-40 years ago when there were people handing out campaign literature INSIDE the voting area. Alaska has a 200 foot rule, and they mean it.
Oh gees, Florida. The Rats are it again.
But ... but ... I thought it was only Republicans who were trying to stop people from voting!!!!!!!!! Democrats who do that are only doing their duty to try and stop people from voting for the wrong person!!! Yeah ... that's the ticket! </sarcasem>
The leftists are turning us into a banana republic!
Anyone using these gastapo tactics is NOT AMERICAN.
This is a direct attack on the basis of our republic.
This should be treated as treason!
10 to 20 year sentances would cool the heels of those heels!
"where's Jimmy Carter?"
yeah, Where Is Jimmy. This army of reporters in florida should get out of their hotel rooms and ask Jimmy what his thoughts are about this. Jimmy always has some sanctimonious ersatz ethics schtick. Let's see how he explains away these tactics. Obviously this will not stand in the light of scrutiny.
bump
The only thing about the early voting that bothered me is that the poll workers all looked like they were street people or hired out of crack houses. I'm not sure I would trust them not to monkey with the ballots while no one was looking.
The Left does not believe in Democracy just Tyranny.
thanks. I couldn't find the previous post about this. I guess I'm kind of worked up about this. Every other article posted here seemed secondary to the issue of tampering at the Florida polling place and I hope others agree here that this issue can not be stressed too often.
Yes, I understand. If Bush doesn't take FL, it will be due to Dem dirty tricks, coupled with incompetence of committee members, poll workers, etc.
I will be casting my vote for Bush, no matter who is standing in my way. Someone wants to "bring it", then they can bring it. There are men dying to ensure my right to vote, so I'll be damned if some punk-a$$ b*tch is going to stand in my way. If they do, I will be happy to fight for my own right to enter the building.
"I remember voting in Pittsburgh PA 30-40 years ago when there were people handing out campaign literature INSIDE the voting area. Alaska has a 200 foot rule, and they mean it."
I saw posts from someone here on FR who was working the polls in florida who said that the 50 foot rule is not in place for early voting. Hopefully there is a judge down there who is not in the tank for Kerry and who will change this ASAP. I don't know how James Baker is letting this slide. Jeb Bush needs to grow a pair and address this sooner rather than later.
Please note that the beginning of the article says that the harassers are partisans of all stripes. That is to set up the typical dem retoprt to accusations of wrongdoing. That is, "everybody does it, so it's no big deal.
