"Going Upriver" takes Vietnam-era film footage, a sound track of 1960s music from Crosby, Stills and Nash, John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix and Bob Dylan (to name a few), and juxtaposes those in-the-moment images and sounds with poignant interviews of Kerry's Swift Boat crew members and others who came home with a burning need to stop the war.
It raises important questions such as, why would a bright, talented Yale student volunteer to serve in Vietnam, instead of seeking a deferment or having his diplomat father pull a few strings to land him a less risky assignment (as others of his generation did, including more than a few members of the Bush administration).
The answers given in this documentary - idealism and a sense of duty - might seem too pat except for the context provided by the filmmaker. Like many young men and women of his generation, Kerry was inspired by the clarion call of President John F. Kennedy's 1961 inaugural address, "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country."

I guess the writer doesn't realize that the honorable Senator Kerry did indeed ask for a deferment so he could go to school in France.
How about an answer like: "Even Kerry couldn't tell you this, because he did seek deferrments and when the well ran dry, he opted for the least dangerous thing he could find, but fate put him in Nam and then he pulled strings to lie and get medals he didn't deserve and beat feet as quick as he could. He abandoned his "brothers" in what he thought was enemy fire and returned to "save the day" when the smoke had cleared.
Try grabbing the phone wires while the phone is ringing!. It's the ringer pulses that do the trick. You've seen the old type phones that hung on the wall, or military field phones, where the user must turn a crank to signal the other end of the line that he wanted to talk? That's what is used, the generator attached to that crank.

seriesly, you are right. the article has its time line screwed up.
"So John Kerry headed off to Vietnam full of patriotic fervor, certain that he was doing the right thing for his country and for himself....
The Tet offensive in 1968. Johnson on TV saying "I shall not seek, and will not accept your nomination, for another term as president." The combat death of a close friend, Richard Pershing. Realities that began to turn Kerry's sense of duty topsy-turvy."
While he may have applied to do a Vietnam photo tour before Tet or Pershing's death, if they were what changed his mind in Feb/March 68, he would not have been heading to Vietnam duty in November 68 "full of patriotic fervor, certain that he was doing the right thing for his country and for himself"
Good one Boazo. Looks like the dems are 'one beast after another', considering Clinton and Gore!
