Parents: Teacher Made Kids Smell Urine
Daily Comet ^ | 12-22-04

Posted on 10/22/2004 7:58:15 PM PDT by Horatio Gates

A group of parents has accused a teacher at Fairdale Elementary School of forcing their sons to go into the classroom bathroom and take deep breaths because there was urine on and around the toilet. "She wanted them to see how bad it smelled," said parent Shelley Howerton.

Howerton and other parents claim the unidentified teacher violated the boys' rights. Ten parents and three children, including Howerton and her son Atrayo, protested outside the school on Thursday.

"This made me sick," said parent Jamie Harvey.

Atrayo said he was embarrassed by the alleged incident.

School officials said the parents' allegation is being investigated.

"We're going to do what's best for these young children," said Miller Hall, Raleigh County director of pupil services. "This is an issue we are going to investigate, but right now it's all hearsay."

"Some kids have said it didn't happen. ... We have to get evidence, talk to witnesses and follow due process. Then we have to look at the policy, and if there was any wrongdoing, we will deal with it accordingly. ... But (the teacher is) innocent until proven guilty."

Do you mind me asking (if it's not too personal), why you chose to teach in the inner city?

If I had a kid and some teacher had his head down on the floor in the bathroom smelling piss, I'd ask a few questions.

It did not say she made them put their head down on or near the floor. It said they were told to take a deep breath.

Little slobs? You don't know them. To call them that is a bit of a reach, isn't it? Even if they are, that's why the school employs janitors.

Is it too much to expect little boys to learn that the whole world does not want to clean up their urine? If they don't learn now they may well be like the millions of adult males who think urinating on the floor and everything else they can hit is totally permissible behavior. They will not have a janitor to follow them around their whole lives. Oh wait, maybe that is what they will expect their wives to do for them. Then after their wives finished the great honor of cleaning up old disgusting pee they can listen about how tough it is for a man to have to put the seat down. (Of course in a case like that it may be just as well they don't since they would probably p**s on that too.)

No teacher should have kids in the bathroom smelling urine. They should be teaching them how to read, write, add, and subtract.

Basic hygiene is a part of education too. Urinating on the floor is unsanitary not to mention disgusting. I suppose if it is too much of a burden to ask them to hit the toilet is is too much to except them to wash their hands too. Great training for future careers such as a brain surgeon or a chef.

Well, after reading the story of the woman teacher who basically beat the crap out of a student's mother in front of the other students, what am I to believe?

There ARE details lacking, but their job isn't to have them smelling piss in the bathroom. Sorry.

I'm in a similar situation. Looks like we're comrades in arms...lol. Keep the faith.

What? No credit at all for having been a student?

Driving the bus and riding the bus are two very different things. Teaching a class is much different than being a member of a class.

Maybe you should go ahead and get that vasectomy.

"If that's all the teacher did to these little slobs, it's fine. Too bad the parents aren't forced to do the same thing...it might help them to teach their kids manners and correct behavior rather than playing another victim card."

This begs the question, how did the teacher know they were guilty? By watching? That brings up more questions doesn't it?

The teacher showed the students the importance of hygene. Showing a student why it's important not to piss on the seat and all over the fllor is much more effective than telling them. If you have never been a teacher, you really don't understand this. So basically, you can have your opinion, but it's not worth much.

By the way, I meant to say hygiene. Got to use that spell check in the future.

I'll take the liberty to answer on behalf of wizard. In LA most of the openings for new hires are for the inner-city. These recruits generally stay for as long as it takes to find another district or another line of work. At these little fortresses there is no support from the administration or parents in dealing with unruly kids. The enironment is as bad as it gets. Wizard probably understated the situation he faces.

There ARE details lacking...

Maybe or maybe not. If details are lacking it does not mean the reader is to make them up. If more details are reveled maybe there will be a update to the story

Actually, I taught lab classes in college. My teachers, good and bad taught me a lot about teaching while I was a student. Most students want consistency, fairness, and can smell BS a mile away. I don't have enough information to know whether the teacher's actions were justified or fair, so I reserve judgement in this case.

You don't need a Chauffer's license to know when the driver is dangerous.

In Kindergarten classrooms the bathroom is adjoining. Of course, the fifth grade students might have interrupted the teaching of the class in the middle of the day to make an en-masse visitation.

Afterall, who really knows, huh?

That would also "bring up more questions."

My two boys had a tendency to wave their 'wands' all over the bathroom and it stunk to high heaven. A few times of them cleaning up after themselves cured the urge to wave it around.

Aren't there also additional "forgiveness" rules for school debt if a teacher teaches in the inner city? I seem to remember this when dealing with all of my school loan paperwork after graduating...

You sound like a complete raving lunatic who has no idea about teaching, classroom management, or instilling group discipline.

You sound like a child molestor who likes making other people's kids smell urine in deep breaths.

I'm sure your labotomist can recommend a good doctor.

The parents? Oh, my God.

Well, before I go off on a rant, let me say that I have some very, very good students from nice, nice familes. Adorable little ladies and gents for whom I'd take a bullet. Their parents come to open house night and I have nothing to say to them except, "Rocio is an angel. If I had 30 Rocios my life would be bliss."

It's Maribel, whose father wants to be absolved of legal responsibility for her (she's 12) because she roams the streets all evening and he has no control over her.

It's Ramiro, whose parents, aunts, uncles, and grandparents have all neglected to pay their phone bills and the phones are disconnected and I can't get hold of anyone to help me manage the little psycho.

It's Ismael, whose father is obviously baffled because his daughter turned out fine but his son is a budding sociopath and he asks ME what he's supposed to do. I'm thinking "Sh*t, you were my last hope and you don't know what to do??"

It's Karla, whose mother is as creepy and psychotic as she is. I have no idea why.

It's Antonique, whose mother is the one who GAVE her the idea that no one has the right to tell her anything.

It's Sandra, the most frighteningly beautiful and precocious 12 year old I've ever seen, whose mother seems to be only about 25 herself so I can see where Sandra's heading.

It's wild, feral Gabriel and sadistic Jose, whose mothers tell me "I'm a single mother, I can't control him either, what can I do?"

It's Crystal whose mother is so angry at the world I can see why Crystal's a f*ck-up.

It's Erick's father who, rather than simple help the kid with his homework, made him write "I am a disobedient child" in his notebook 500 times (which he now does instead of his homework.)

It's Andrew whose father is too busy battling the mother in the ugly divorce to notice that his fat little boy is turning into a real weirdo.

It's Max, incredibly intelligent Max, whose mother is busy explaining why that drug gang shot at her, and she reeks of alcohol at parent-teacher night (as soon as I got home, I started drinking too).

I would say I don't know how to start, but it's obvious I've started. I guess I don't know where to quit and give up.
