A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.   Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.
A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day was introduced on June 24, 2002. It's only a small room in JimRob's house where we can get to know one another a little better; salute and support our military and our leaders; pray for those in need; and congratulate those deserving. We strive to keep our threads entertaining, fun, and pleasing to look at, and often have guest writers contribute an essay or a profile of another FReeper.
On Mondays please visit us to see photos of A FEW OF FR'S VETERANS AND ACTIVE MILITARY
If you have a suggestion, or an idea, or if there's a FReeper you would like to see featured, please drop one of us a note in FR mail.
We're having fun and hope you are!

Shall I perform the Chicken Dance in my cubicle?

Maybe you could turn up the volume and get everyone around you to join in. :)

Popcorn and must see TV tonight. We're in one of the Sinclair markets so we'll be watching the POW presentation tonight.

Tuesday's wind and rain storm, along with losing electricty for 5 hours, left the yard a mess so I think I know what's in store for my weekend activities.

Oh, how I would love to see that presentation. Not airing near us. Please give us your thoughts after you watch it; I know there will be many threads about it later - it's just hard to read everyone's comments.

No electricity for 5 hours?! That's tough! Hope your frozen food stayed frozen. Good thing we ate up all your ice cream Wednesday with our apple pie. :)

I remember seeing that picture when EMB posted it thinking it would make a good pledge graphic. You did it justice!

Thank you, Aqua! Let's just ping Mr. Bellicosity and thank him again for posting the original picture, since so many have commented on it! I saved the close-up picture of the same plane, but really liked seeing it up in the wild blue yonder better!

Happy Friday! This time next week I will be in Atlanta chit-chatting with old friends and wondering what y'all are up to!

We'll just be up to the same thing - waiting to see what the nasty rats are going to come up with *next* and praying for an overwhelming Republican turnout and a clear victory on November 2nd. :)

Know you're going to have such a good time with everyone! Will be thinking about you!

The Rich Family In Church

I'll never forget Easter 1946. I was 14, my little sister Ocy was 12,
and my older sister Darlene 16. We lived at home with our mother, and
the four of us knew what it was to do without many things. My dad had died
five years before, leaving Mom with seven school kids to raise and no money.

By 1946 my older sisters were married and my brothers had left home. A
month before Easter the pastor of our church announced that a special
Easter offering would be taken to help a poor family. He asked everyone to
save and give sacrificially.

When we got home, we talked about what we could do. We decided to buy 50
pounds of potatoes and live on them for a month. This would allow us to
save $20 of our grocery money for the offering. Then we thought that if
we kept our electric lights turned out as much as possible and didn't
listen to the radio, we'd save money on that month's electric bill.
Darlene got as many house and yard cleaning jobs as possible, and both of us

babysat for everyone we could. For 15 cents we could buy enough cotton loops to

make three potholders to sell for $1. We made $20 on potholders. That month
was the best of our lives.

Every day we counted the money to see how much we had saved. At night
we'd sit in the dark and talk about how the poor family was going to enjoy
having the money the church would give them. We had about 80 people in
church, so we figured that whatever amount of money we had to give, the offering
would surely be about 20 times that much. After all, every Sunday the
pastor had reminded everyone to save for the sacrificial offering.

The day before Easter, Ocy and I walked to the grocery store and got the
manager to give us three crisp $20 bills and one $10 bill for all our
change. We ran all the way home to show Mom and Darlene. We had never
had so much money before.

That night we were so excited we could hardly sleep. We didn't care
that we wouldn't have new clothes for Easter; we had $70 for the sacrificial offering.

We could hardly wait to get to church! On Sunday morning, rain was
pouring. We didn't own an umbrella, and the church was over a mile from our
home, but it didn't seem to matter how wet we got. Darlene had cardboard in her
shoes to fill the holes. The cardboard came apart, and her feet got wet.
But we sat in church proudly. I heard some teenagers talking about the
Smith girls having on their old dresses. I looked at them in their new
clothes and felt rich. When the sacrificial offering was taken, we were
sitting on the second row from the front. Mom put in the $10 bill, and
each of us kids put in a $20.

As we walked home after church, we sang all the way. At lunch Mom had a
surprise for us. She had bought a dozen eggs, and we had boiled Easter
eggs with our fried potatoes! Late that afternoon the minister drove up in
his car. Mom went to the door, talked with him for a moment, and then came
back with an envelope in her hand. We asked what it was, but she didn't say
a word. She opened the envelope and out fell a bunch of money. There were
three crisp $20 bills, one $10 and seventeen $1 bills.

Mom put the money back in the envelope. We didn't talk, just sat and
stared at the floor. We had gone from feeling like millionaires to feeling
like poor white trash. We kids had such a happy life that we felt sorry for
anyone who didn't have our Mom and Dad for parents and a house full of
brothers and sisters and other kids visiting constantly. We thought it
was fun to share silverware and see whether we got the spoon or the fork
that night. We had two knives that we passed around to whomever needed them.
I knew we didn't have a lot of things that other people had, but I'd never
thought we were poor.

That Easter day I found out we were.

The minister had brought us the money for the poor family, so we must be
poor. I didn't like being poor. I looked at my dress and worn-out shoes
and felt so ashamed. I didn't even want to go back to church. Everyone
there probably already knew we were
poor! I thought about school. I was in the ninth grade and at the top
of my class of over 100 students. I wondered if the kids at school knew
that we were poor. I decided that I could quit school since I had finished
the eighth grade. That was all the law required at that time.

We sat in silence for a long time. Then it got dark, and we went to bed.
All that week, we girls went to school and came home, and no one talked
much. Finally on Saturday, Mom asked us what we wanted to do with the
money. What did poor people do with money? We didn't know. We'd never
known we were poor. We didn't want to go to church on Sunday, but Mom
said we had to. Although it was a sunny day, we didn't talk on the way.
Mom started to sing, but no one joined in and she only sang one verse.

At church we had a missionary speaker. He talked about how churches in
Africa made buildings out of sun dried bricks, but they needed money to
buy roofs. He said $100 would put a roof on a church. The minister said,
"Can't we all sacrifice to help these poor people?"

We looked at each other and smiled for the first time in a week. Mom
reached into her purse and pulled out the envelope. She passed it to
Darlene. Darlene gave it to me, and I handed it to Ocy. Ocy put it in
the offering.

When the offering was counted, the minister announced that it was a
little over $100. The missionary was excited. He hadn't expected such a
large offering from our small church. He said, "You must have some rich
people in this church."

Suddenly it struck us! We had given $87 of that "little over $100." We
were the rich family in the church! Hadn't the missionary just said so?
From that day on I've never been poor again. I've always remembered how
rich I am because I have Jesus!

WASHINGTON, Oct. 22, 2004 -- Marines from the 1st Marine Division are, for the
second straight day, engaging several groups of insurgents on the outskirts of
Fallujah, Iraq.

Today's engagement began at about 4 p.m. when insurgent forces from within the
city fired small arms and mortars at Marines conducting security operations
near the city. Marines are countering these attacks with substantial and
proportionate ground fires, officials said.

Soldiers from the 1st Infantry Division detained two anti-Iraqi force members
during an Oct. 21 raid near Tikrit. The raid was conducted based on information
that munitions were stored in the house. The two detainees were taken to a
coalition detention facility for questioning. Several weapons were confiscated,
including five rocket-propelled grenade launchers, an RPG round, an AK-47
assault rifle, a pistol, 26 AK-47 magazines, four 155 mm artillery rounds and
one 60 mm mortar base plate.

Four suspects were detained during an Oct. 21 raid in the town of Zab. The raid
was conducted to capture a known improvised-explosive-device manufacturer,
officials said. Task Force Danger soldiers found IED-making material and
detained the suspects. Three of the four tested positive for explosives, and an
explosives-sniffing military working dog alerted on the same three individuals.
The four suspects and the IED materials are being held at a coalition facility.

We should never get so comfortable in life that we forget there are others
around us who are in need physically, emotionally and spiritually. There
are times in life where we become so involved with what we are doing that
we do not see there is a hurting world in need of our intervention. As
children of the Lord, we are to be sensitive to the needs of others and be
quick to lend a helping hand when the opportunity arises. In the spirit of
being helpful even in the simplest way, we will find that it is we who gave
who receive the biggest blessing because we were being used of God to
intervene and affect someone else's day for the better. I pray that we
never allow our comfort state to keep us from intervening in the lives of
others to share His peace and joy to all who are in need. (Galatians 5:13-26)

I hope you are greatly blessed by today's message.

DON'T WE ALL?

One evening I was parked in front of the mall wiping off my car. I had just
come from the car wash and was waiting for my wife to get out of work.
Coming my way from across the parking lot was what society would consider
a bum. From the looks of him, he had no car, no home, no clean clothes, and
no money. There are times when you feel generous but there are other times
that you just don't want to be bothered. This was one of the "Don't want
to be bothered" times.

"I hope he doesn't ask me for money," I thought. He didn't. He came and sat
on the curb in front of the bus stop and he didn't look like he could have
enough money to even ride the bus. After a few minutes he spoke. "That's a
very nice car," he said. He was ragged but had an air of dignity around
him. I said, "Thanks," and continued wiping off my car.

He sat there quietly as I worked. The expected plea for money never came.
As the silence between us widened something inside said, 'ask him if he
needs any help.' I was sure that he would say yes, but I held true to the
inner voice.

"Do you need any help?" I asked. He answered in three simple but profound
words that I shall never forget. We often look for wisdom in great men and
women. We expect it from those of higher learning and accomplishments. I
expected nothing but an outstretched grimy hand. He spoke three words that
shook me.

"Don't we all?" he said.

I needed help. Maybe not for bus fare or a place to sleep, but I needed
help. I reached in my wallet and gave him not only enough for bus fare but
enough to get a warm meal and shelter for the day. Those three little words
still ring true. No matter how much you have, no matter how much you have
accomplished, you need help too. No matter how little you have, no matter
how loaded you are with problems, even without money or a place to sleep,
you can give help. Even if it's just a compliment, you can give that.

You never know when you may see someone that appears to have it all. They
are waiting on you to give them what they don't have. A different
perspective on life, a glimpse at something beautiful, a respite from daily
chaos, that only you through a torn world can see.

Maybe the man was just a homeless stranger wandering the streets. Maybe he
was more than that. Maybe he was sent by a power that is great and wise to
minister to a soul too comfortable in themselves.

Maybe God looked down, called an Angel, dressed him like a bum, then said,
"Go minister to that man cleaning the car, that man needs help."

Read and meditate on these scriptures:

Matthew 5:5-9 Jesus declares "Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit
the earth. Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness:
for they shall be filled. Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain
mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. Blessed are
the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God."

Galatians 6:1-4 "Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are
spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering
thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Bear ye one another's burdens, and so
fulfil the law of Christ. For if a man think himself to be something, when
he is nothing, he deceiveth himself. But let every man prove his own work,
and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another."

Hebrews 13:1-3 "Let brotherly love continue. Be not forgetful to entertain
strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. Remember them
that are in bonds, as bound with them; and them which suffer adversity, as
being yourselves also in the body."

One day a guy died and found himself in hell. As he was wallowing in despair, he had his first meeting with a demon.

The demon asked, "Why so glum?"

The guy responded, "What do you think? I'm in hell!"

"Hell's not so bad," the demon said. "We actually have a lot of fun down here. You a drinking man?"

"Sure," the man said, "I love to drink."

"Well, you're gonna love Mondays then. On Mondays all we do is drink. Whiskey, tequila, Guinness, wine coolers, diet Tab and Fresca. We drink till we throw up and then we drink some more!"

The guy is astounded. "Damn, that sounds great."

"You a smoker?" the demon asked.

"You better believe it!"

"You're gonna love Tuesdays. We get the finest cigars from all over the world and smoke our lungs out! . If you get cancer, no biggie. You're already dead, remember?"

"Wow, the guy said, "that's awesome!"

The demon continued. "I bet you like to gamble."
"Why yes, as a matter of fact I do."

"Wednesdays you can gamble all you want. Craps, blackjack, roulette, poker, slots, whatever. If you go bankrupt, well, you're dead anyhow. You into drugs?"

The guy said, "Are you kidding? I love drugs! You don't mean . .. ."

"That's right! Thursday is drug day. Help yourself to a great big bo! wl of crack, or smack. Smoke a doobie the size of a submarine. You can do all the drugs you want, you're dead, who cares!"

"Wow," the guy said, starting to feel better about his situation, "I never realized Hell was such a cool place!"

The demon said, "You gay?"

"No."

"Ooooh, you're gonna hate Fridays!"

Zealous For God

Read: 2 Kings 13:14-19

Epaphras . . . greets you, always laboring fervently for you in prayers . . . . I bear him witness that he has a great zeal for you. —Colossians 4:12-13

Bible In One Year: Jeremiah 1-2; 1 Timothy 3

We know little about Epaphras except that he was so concerned about the spiritual welfare of the people in Colosse that he is described as "laboring fervently . . . in prayers" for them (Colossians 4:12). When I was a pastor, I saw this kind of enthusiasm in the way new converts prayed and witnessed. But all too often, many of them gradually lost their zeal.

I believe it was King Joash's lack of enthusiasm that made Elisha so angry (2 Kings 13). The monarch had obeyed the dying prophet's command to shoot an arrow toward the east. He had heard Elisha's promise that God would bring his nation complete deliverance from Syria. Joash had obeyed the command to strike the ground with a bundle of arrows, which he did three times. So why did the prophet angrily tell him he should have struck the ground five or six times?

I believe it was because he felt Joash was following his instructions in a half-hearted manner. The king should have been far more enthusiastic in his response to God's wonderful message of victory over Israel's enemies.

The king's nonchalance cost him dearly. He won an incomplete victory. I wonder how many spiritual victories we forfeit because of our lack of zeal. —Herb Vander Lugt

Let us serve the Lord with gladness
And enthusiastic praise,
Telling all who do not know Him
Of His great and wondrous ways. —Sper

Godly zeal is love on fire.
