CA: (Bill) Jones lacks money to aid Senate run
Sacramento Bee ^ | October 21, 2004 | Alexa H. Bluth

U.S. Senate candidate Bill Jones has been unable to come up with the $2 million he had promised to spend on his campaign, a top aide said Wednesday, dimming the chances that his cash-strapped campaign will launch a single television ad before the Nov. 2 election.

Jones' senior strategist, Sean Walsh, said the campaign needs a major infusion of cash, but that Jones "has not been able to successfully liquidate his assets to put into the campaign."

"Without a significant contribution from the candidate, it will be very difficult to put any meaningful advertising on television," Walsh said.

Even if he could come up with the cash, political experts said, it is too late for Jones to narrow Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer's yawning lead with 12 days left in the race.

Republican consultant Dave Gilliard said it would be difficult for Jones to get his ads on airwaves already heavily booked with political ads.

In any case, Gilliard said, the race is over.

"It's just too late to start advertising in that race," he said. "This race is put to bed. A candidate can't wait until the last week to start a campaign."

I wonder if McClintock would have been any better?

Bill Jones has been the invisible candidate. I don't know why he even bothered running. The CA Republican Party is just not a serious organization, and we are stuck with another six years of Babs Boxorocks.

Now, can anybody tell me how to vote on judges in California/LA County?

While there is much to be pleased about on a national level, I can't tell you how frustrating it is to be a Republican in California! I have volunteered to assist President Bush in the final 72 hours (making phone calls to battleground states) but California is simply a waste of time.

We need to clean house in the California Republican party. The thought of Boxer for another 6 years is pathetic, yet we don't mount any serious challenge. How many more election cycles do we go through like this? Sheessshh.... bummer.

The CAGOP has sold their soul to the Natl. ticket. It seems that everthing they do and everyone they support is done with an eye to how it helps the Party in Washington, with small regard to fighting for Republicans in the State. The Natl. Party won't spend a dime in CA, even if it means that people like Boxer are given a shoo-in.

Fellow Conservatives, we have been written off.

Nope. McClintock is seen as a puritanical, uncompromising ranting kook who's accomplished nothing in all his years of legislative service. Jones has many problems: he flip-flopped from Bush to McCain last minute before the CA 2000 primary, he authored for the largest tax increase in state history, he was a lame Secretary of State, came in 3rd behind Simon & Reardon in the 2002 gubernatorial primary, he's an inept campaigner and the first debate was a mammoth disaster of sweating and stumbling.

Save your money. Donate to the RNC or a candidate who can win like Thune in South Dakota on the verge of sending Dash-hole packing.

AMEN!

We'll get rid of Boxer when she's forced out by old age or dies. The state GOP is just so pathetic as to be maddening. Jones was a sure loser. We might've had a chance with that "moderate" Latino woman who had been Treasury Secretary under Bush. Not perfect, sure, but it would've been a huge gain over Boxer's record.

Jones is a POS. Jones, Fong, Campbell, all POS. Yes, McClintock would have been a LOT better; talk about an energized base. I think McC would have beaten Boxer, but could not beat DiFi, who is portrayed as a moderate due to the leftist Boxer.

Jones has been an unmitigated disaster! He was a poor choice against Senawhore Boxer. We are totally lost in California on so many issues. If my job wasn't here, I would leave in a heartbeat.

How can a guy run and not raise any funds??

Why the h--l did Jones become a candidate if he was not going to make a serious push. I really don't want 6 more years of Boxer but Jones is guaranteeing it. There were other candidates including a Hispanic woman who might have had more of a shot. I live in California and have seen absolutely no evidence of a Jones campaign.

I was disappointed that Jones was elected to be the candidate opposing Boxer. As soon as he announced his candiacy I was hoping he would not be it. There was a very conservative Mexican\American Woman that ran against him, I was hoping she would have been the one to run against Boxer.

I think the problem in California is gerrymandering and it's unlikely anyone will be able to unseat that Box. McClintock should be running for that or higher national office. He's as honest as the day is long (truly unlike most politicians) and one more example of someone who's word you can take to the bank, i.e., says what he means and means what he says. Everyone should go to www.tommcclintock.com and familiarize yourselves with him. He's the best!!! If you like what you see, we've got a jump on 2008.

So, even if a candidate has money now, there probably isn't any airtime left for him to buy?

At least McClintock has name recognition thanks to the recall campaign.

I don't know if California would want to elect someone as conservative as he, and I don't know how well he'd do in a legislative position where heavy compromising would be needed.

But at least he would have an interesting campaign, which is way better than Jones.

Everything I feared from a Jones nomination and then some. Sigh.

We have a Senate candidate?

When I voted a couple weeks ago, both my state assembly and senate positions were empty against the incumbent Democrat. I should have run!
