Excommunicated or Not, Kerry is not Permitted to Receive Communion

WASHINGTON, October 20, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The controversy over the Catholic lawsuit against Presidential candidate John Kerry, and the denial by Vatican personalities of having been involved in it in any way has generated confusion about Kerry's status within the church.

Apart from the question of whether or not Kerry is "automatically excommunicated", recent authoritative Vatican statements have made clear that he is, by virtue of his support for abortion, not permitted to receive communion.

The Catholic penalty of excommunication is to be distinguished from inadmissibility to receive communion which comes with being in a state of serious sin. The Vatican has spoken loud and clear about Catholic politicians who support abortion and their unworthiness to receive communion.

In April, the Vatican's leading prelate on the Sacraments, Cardinal Francis Arinze, declared unequivocally that unambiguously pro-abortion politicians should be denied Holy Communion. Later it was revealed that Cardinal Ratzinger, who heads the most important congregation in the Vatican, told U.S. bishops in a letter, entitled 'Worthiness to receive Holy Communion', that pro-abortion politicians, who will not alter their stand or abstain from communion after being instructed by church leaders, "must" be refused communion.

Kerry's own bishop, Boston Archbishop Sean O'Malley told LifeSiteNews.com in an interview in January, "These politicians should know that if they're not voting correctly on these life issues that they shouldn't dare come to communion."

Those clear positions have not stopped Kerry from coming forward to receive communion. As recently as October 11 he was reported to have received communion at a Catholic church. The Palm Beach Post reports that Kerry attended Mass and received communion at St. James Catholic Church in North Miami Beach. The paper reports that Rev. Jean Pierre "strayed from religion to politics, echoing some of Kerry's stump speech about the American Dream (being) on the ballot in November."

I assume you are a Bush supporter and a Republican (I am myself)

Who has been President for the last 4 years?

Who has controlled Congress? Abortion is still legal, even though we have a supposed 'Pro Life' President. If Bush is re-elected, do you think that he will appoint Supreme Court Justices that will reverse Roe vs. Wade?

If Roe vs. Wade is reversed, abortion will become a states rights' issue, in other words, abortion will not be prohibited in every state.

As for myself I am against abortion, but I am not out there in front of clinics protesting or anything like that.

Your profile page proclaims you to be a Maryland Libertarian ...

Bush supporter? Yes, on many issues. Including the sort of folks who are likely to be appointed to the Federal Courts. As you well know, in 1973 the Supreme Court usurped the legitimate authority of the several States to outlaw abortion as a form of murder. On this issue, control of the Congress is a red herring. And Pres. Bush is far more likely to appoint judges and justices who respect the Constitution than is the Joker King.

Fundamentally, though, this whole business is a matter of internal Catholic debate, as to whether someone who actively supports legalised abortion is fit to participate in the sacramental life of the Church. If it bothers you, don't click on it.

If Roe vs. Wade is reversed, abortion will become a states rights' issue,

as all matters of simple criminal law should be.

in other words, abortion will not be prohibited in every state

but the matter can be addressed in the State Legislatures, or on State ballot referenda, where it belongs.

That means his two GROWN daughters don't really exist!

No, it means that the relationship of their parents didn't reach the level of a sacrament, but I'm sure all parties involved probably already knew that.

Why are you bashing the Catholic Church?

Do we bash your church?

If my experience is any indicator, there are three main reasons:

1) The state of Catholic education in the United States is worse than abysmal; the average "pew potato" doesn't know even the rudiments of his Catholic faith, or what they mean; hence the mind-boggling comments like "Yeah, Kerry is pro-abortion, and that's not very good, but hey... he's really good on health care!" Even if that were true (and it's completely bogus), the comparison would be insane; the slaughter of 3000+ unborn children A DAY simply has no parity with socialized medicine. (And I, for some stupid reason, find that rather obvious!)

2) Since the days of Herbert Hoover, who was largely a scapegoat for the outrage over the Great Depression, the Catholics of the United States largely went to the Democratic party in order to support "the party of the little guy", and to protest Hoover. By now, the current baby-boomer Democrat Catholics have forgotten why they're Democrats; all they know is that their parents were Democrats, and their parents were Democrats.

3) The scandal given by a torrent of dissenting priests, nuns, lay people, and (sometimes) even bishops--most notably in their rebellion against Humanae Vitae (the encyclical which repeated Catholic condemnation of artificial birth control... much to the chagrin of the gaggle of liberal priests who were sympathetic to the "free love" philosophy of the 1960's and 1970's). In short, liberals swamped the seminaries, and tried to hijack the Church; they haven't succeeded, but they've caused terrible damage in the process.

There's *so* much more, but that should do for starters...

Well really, how strong of a Catholic can she really be if she puts a pro-abortion candidate in office?

Excommunicated??????

This is a long standing myth. Both of your relatives or relatives in law were not excommunicated. They merely cannot receive the sacraments since they married after a divorce without getting a proper annulment.

They are NOT excommunicated. All they have to do is sit down with a priest or deacon and get this process started.

I am a Bush supporter...not a Republican.

Where have you been for the past 4 years? Have you not noticed that the Dems haven't allowed votes on any of the judicial appointees Bush has made?

Estrella, Owens...

The only judges the Dems in the Senate want to see are radical pro-abort ones who pass the liberal "litmus" test.

Children from an annulled marriage are not illegitimate!

Another myth about Catholic/Canon Law that non-Catholics seek to perpetuate.

The marriage was a valid --civil-- marriage, thus no children are illegitimate.

An annulment merely states that the previous marriage was not a valid --Catholic-- marriage.

Please sit down with a priest or a deacon and get the facts before you go around perpetuating these myths.

When faith and politics conflict, *faithful* Catholics *should* put faith before politics. That's the problem, though; many Catholics are too ignorant, or too rebellious (or both) to be faithful to the Church.

See #33

These children are not considered illegitimate in the eyes of the Catholic Church.

Please check the facts before you continue to run off at the mouth about the Catholic Church.

If you don't understand how annulments work, then please sit down and talk with someone who does understand the subject.

Obviously she is not informed or else she would not be voting Democrat (and thus be supporting abortion!!

Ask her to check out this link:
