Ballot scams aimed at early Manatee voters
Bradenton Herald ^ | Thu, Oct. 21, 2004 | NICK MASON

Two voting scams were reported Wednesday in Manatee County, prompting Supervisor of Elections Bob Sweat to issue public warnings so county voters do not get cheated out of their right to vote.

"It's very misrepresentative to the people, and we just don't want the people confused," Sweat said. "Somebody is out there doing something they shouldn't do."

Sweat said Palmetto Mayor Larry Bustle told him Wednesday that someone with a portable computer had approached residents of northeastern Palmetto at their homes and offered to let them vote on the computer so they would not have to go to the polls Nov. 2 or vote early at the county elections office annex, 321 15th St. W., Bradenton.

"There is no voting by (portable) computer," Sweat said. "No such program exists."

Palmetto Ward 1 Councilwoman Mary Lancaster said residents of her neighborhood told her that the scam targeted residents Sunday. She spoke with Bustle on Wednesday, and he notified Sweat.

"I got calls that someone was coming to their houses with a laptop computer and voter registration lists and was telling them that if they voted by giving them that information to put in the computer, then they wouldn't have to go to the polls," Lancaster said. "My response to that was that they still need to go to the polls; they had not voted."

Sweat said he received another call Wednesday from an anonymous woman informing him that strangers falsely claiming to be county elections office employees visited her home and offered to take her completed absentee ballot to the elections office, saving her the trip or postage to mail it to the elections office.

"There is no legitimate ballot pick-up service," Sweat said. "There is nobody from this office going around the community signing up people to vote absentee or offering to deliver completed absentee ballots to this office. Don't be flim-flammed by somebody who comes to your home claiming to be part of this elections office."

Sweat said he intended to notify Manatee County Sheriff Charlie Wells of the two scams. Sweat said impersonating an elections office employee is a crime, so he will ask that any violator who is caught be arrested and prosecuted.

Voting fraud in the area--and a lousy scam too.

Isn't it great we have early voting. That way there is a full two weeks to stuff the ballot boxes or come up with a new voting scam for every day. Cool :)

Do Florida voters HAVE to vote early or can they wait to election day if they choose?

The polls are just open for two weeks. The concept of election day no longer exists. The traditional election day is just the last day to vote.

Manatees are slow and need more time to get to the polls.

Early voting is voluntary. The Democrats are hoping for a large number of early voters. They're hoping that projections for Kerry will discourage potential Bush voters from voting.

Some one in Florida was complaining that so much can change between now and the real election day. So I thought "Well then wait before you vote, you loser." Floridians can't seem to figure things out can they?

FL has a dim party that relishes in trying to herd minorities and retirees toward their causes. It usually just results in colossal screwups like the 2000 election where the to cute by half crowd got all those condo voters to vote for Buchanan.

If people are allowed to do this, our country is gone.

If we aren't allowed to peacefully vote for our representatives, people will use guns to express themselves.

The bad people are playing with fire, and the good guys are complicit if they don't arrest people doing illegal things.

LOL!

Manatees are slow and need more time to get to the polls.

They also need help. After all, they don't have opposing thumbs.

The real scam with early voting is that if you don't vote early, you may find that someone has already voted in your name by the time you do show up.

I don't know if any early fraudulent votes could then be identified or discarded.

This one is straight out of the Democrat Election Manual that was posted here a few days ago. The Dems are planning to bundle and deliver absentee ballots.

In FL you need to have your voter ID card and a picture state of FL ID. All the data must match, address, picture name and voter ledger. Then you have to sign the ledger. So it is a good system -- And they do actually verify and look at the photo vs person standing there.

How can you tell if a manatee has been in your voting booth?
