If it were a boxing match, they would have thrown in the towel. If it were a Little League game, they would have invoked the mercy rule. Unfortunately for hapless Kerry spokesman Mike McCurry, no such refuge was available, and he had to suffer a relentless, devastating, take-no-prisoners, never-back-down pounding at the hands of Liz Cheney, daughter of the Vice President. Wow! What a star was just [at least for this viewer] born. Where has she been?
Sometimes shows like Today concoct a theme for an interview and try to force their square guests into the round hole they have conceived. The topic today was the notion that both campaigns were exploiting the politics of fear.
But Liz would have none of it. "This isn't about trying to scare people. We are truly at war. This is about who has the strong leadership to win that war. Of course Kerry is forced to make tough statements now, but his words are contradicted by his record."
She continued: "Kerry has been on the wrong side of every major national policy issue over the last 20 years, from cutting $7 billion in intelligence after the WTC was bombed for the first time, to voting against the 1991 Gulf War, to opposing most of the weapons systems used to fight the war on terror."
Before describing McCurry's remarks, a few words about his looks. I don't know if he might be a baseball fan who stayed up to watch the game, or whether he was up all night putting out the fires from Teresa's "my experience is bigger than hers" gaffe, or whether it is simply the wear and tear of a long campaign, but I have never, NEVER, seen a political aide look this palpably tired on national TV.
Not only was his face haggard, but his eyes were so red-rimmed that one had to wonder if he had been on a crying jag. One thing is clear: being inside the Kerry campaign nowadays ain't a bowl of cherries.
In any case, McC claimed that "we took our eyes off the terrorists to divert to go to war in Iraq that is now causing so much pain. We can't go on with more of the same and need to change directions."
But soon it was back to Liz on the attack: "The 9/11 Commission found we're not safe, but we're safer than we were before 9/11. But with his talk of global tests and describing terrorism as a nuisance, one has to question whether Kerry really understands nature of challenge we face."
Katie tried to put Liz on the spot, quoting her father to the effect that the country could be more vulnerable to attack if Kerry were elected. If Couric thought that would put Liz on the defensive, she was badly mistaken. Liz didn't back down for a second: "Weakness invites attack. The policies Kerry/Edwards propose would take us back to 90s when we treated terrorism as a law enforcement and intellignece matter. They have sent signals of wavering."
When McCurry tried some wan retort, Liz cut him off at the knees: "The record doesn't match the rhetoric, Mike, the record doesn't match rhetoric."
Even when a defeated McCurry, on his knees, begging for mercy, tried to AGREE with Liz, she would give no quarter. By the end, McCurry was pitiably saying that when it comes to the need to pay attention to terror threats, "we agree about that."
"No, we disagree," retorted Liz!
This was the most lopsided, devastating rhetorical victory I have ever seen on Today. It made last night's sad [for this Yankees fan] shellacking look like a nail-biting cliffhanger.
Bravo, Liz, you are my new hero! Let's see more of her along the trail!
Any mention of the heinz-kerry pickle from yesterday?
I appreciate your contentful reviews. (Far better than a headline, and just an "Ooh! Did you see that? Wow! Whoa!")

Definitely a day to hoist one of the Rocky Mountain's finest in her honor. [And Go Pete!]
Please let us know what you think.
And an excerpt from Al Ahram:
At her office at the State Department, US Deputy Assistant Secretary for Near Eastern Affairs, Liz Cheney, is busy hanging up front pages of newspapers which mark the fall of Baghdad to US forces on 9 April. "Hussein's Baghdad falls", reads one headline above the famous picture of the statue of former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein being pulled down by a US tank surrounded by several hundred Iraqis. Like other members of the US administration, 36-year-old Cheney believes that the fall of the former Iraqi regime and "establishing Iraq as a stable, democratic and prosperous nation" are crucial for the rest of the region.
Liz, daughter of US Vice-President Dick Cheney who is known as a key hard-liner in the Bush administration together with Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, has been supervising the implementation of the Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI), officially announced by Secretary of State Colin Powell in December. The aims of the initiative, which received an initial funding of $29 million in 2002 and $100 million for 2003, are to provide support for "economic, political, and educational reform efforts in the Middle East and champion opportunity for all people of the region, especially women and youth".
I believe it was the first interview up. Should be on right now.
You've seen the video of Edwards "attending" his hair, right?
BULL S*!T..
If you haven't read this book yet, go buy it. It's a great description of what went on in the WOT starting just after 9-11-01.
Hummmm and what did Tommy Franks just say?......
I just heard from another Freeper that the Teresa's comment is getting heavy radio play this morning in Michigan. By the way, a new poll just came out indicating Bush is up by 5 in Michigan. I believe the Detroit Free Press might have the story.
True, and his wife Lynne might even be smarter, so Liz got a double-shot of brilliant genes.
It's time to quit being polite and meet them toe-to-toe. It's time to nail them on each and every single one of those BS lies they keep spouting. And it's time to quit allowing the Dems to walk over them like an old rug.
Yup, I meant to include the fack that Lynne ain't no slouch either. :-}
I just wish that everyone could see the end of the interview, in which a beaten, bruised and battered McC, looking to call off the hounds, throws up the white flag and agrees with Liz.
She will have none of it, and stalks across the ring, and with one foot on his neck, gets in a few latest savage kicks to the ribs. "NO, WE DON'T AGREE!", she says, once and again!
ILOVEITILOVEITILOVEIT!
So sorry I missed this. Thanks for the commentary.
Excellent analysis! Yet she was tough as nails. She seems to have her father's mind with this pleasantly feminine aura.
You're right. Liz did us all proud. Of course after that, Katy went to a piece on Bill Clinton...is he running again?
Thanks to your post, I was able to catch this interview. I would never have even known about it without your heads up.
I got a kick out of Couric. After Liz interrupted Mccurry with, "The record doesn't match the rhetoric," Katie said in a flat tone, "Mike go ahead and then we're gonna go." Couric was clearly disgusted with the way that segment was going.
