WHICH candidate sportsmen think will most protect their hunting and fishing heritage may very well be the occupant of the White House for the next four years. Hunters and anglers may play an even greater role in the election than either camp had predicted, based on the findings of a survey released on Monday by the bipartisan Congressional Sportsmen's Foundation (CSF).
The survey of licensed hunters and anglers in Florida, New Mexico, and Ohio suggests that the percentage of sportsmen who will cast votes in these key swing states will be well above the national average. Based on survey findings in Ohio, 75 percent of sportsmen are considered "likely voters," the number jumps to 80 percent in New Mexico, and Florida tops the group with 82 percent.
Just as important, the survey suggests that a sizable number of the sportsmen polled have yet to make a decision on a candidate, which could account for several hundred thousand votes in these three states consider the fact that a few hundred votes in a few key states determined the outcome of the 2000 election.
The findings also noted that other battleground states with high sportsmen populations such as Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Wisconsin will likely also see the effects of the sportsmen's vote.
About nine in 10 sportsmen polled said that they voted in the 2000 elections. Doug Painter, the Hunting and Shooting Sports Heritage Foundation president, stresses the importance of participation, "There are nearly 40 million sportsmen of voting age in the United States. If all of us had voted in the 2000 presidential election, we would have equaled 36 percent of the entire vote."
It is clear that sportsmen care about conservation and protecting their hunting and fishing traditions and recent history has shown that...

No wonder we see John Kerry trying to "get me a hunting license" and walking around with guns. What a joke.
Ripe pickings for the $20M the NRA is spending.
Al Gore was at least a Southerner. (Although a bad one). I do not see how sportsmen could vote for Kerry.
I certainly hope that all hunters and fishermen turn out to vote. Everyone knows which candidate spells doom for sportsmen and shooters.
So, the point of the article is that
1-they vote Repub to preserve their gun rights -OR-
2-they vote Dem to preserve the environment.
I didn't pick up on which it was.
Don't forget the photo ops with the hunting jacket, now the replacement for the pink ties.
It's infuriating.
"SPORTSMEN MAY DECIDE WHO WINS WHITE HOUSE"
We can only hope.
That photo is begging for captions!
I drove by a big 4'x8' "sportsman for Kerry" sign.
I want a 4'x8' weatherproof blow up of the NRA Poodle ad that I can put just down the road from it. I would appreciate someone telling me how to get one made.
And John Kerry is no sportsman.
Kerry is supported by the Humane Society of the United States,HSUS, and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, PETA. His supporters want a pristine environment and no hunting or fishing, IIRC.
Apparently, in his early days, John Kerry was quite the Snipe hunter.
According to his Yale yearbook, Kerry was an excellent snipe hunter. It is written that members of his senior class would ask him to go snipe hunting every Friday night. It is said that Kerry was the scout who would lead the group on the hunt.
"And John Kerry is no sportsman."
Agreed. A sporting man, maybe, but no sportsman.
I hope they left him holding the bag.
That's sad. Is Kerry going to vote against their guns before he votes for them, or vice versa?
This election will be decided by a 52-year-old disabled, lesbian, half Eskimo, half Lebanese, formerly Catholic, pro-life , pro-stem cell, duck-hunting waitress at the hot dog stand at Daytona Raceway. You heard it here first.
Well, there is a bird called a snipe and it is actually one of the hardest game birds to shoot because of its erratic flight patterns when flushed. People who could consistently shoot snipe earned the name sniper.
Of Course Kerry probably was taken snipe hunting, like we used to take newbies in the Boy Scouts.
