Jimmy Carter: American Revolution Was 'Unnecessary'
Recently we described Jimmy Carter as the worst president of the past 100 years. We apologize.
He's the worst president ever.
In trying to compare the American Revolution to the war in Iraq, here's what the jug-headed Georgian said to fellow Democrat Chris Matthews on "Hardball" Monday night, according to MSNBC's own transcript:
'A Little More Sensitive'
Well, one parallel is that the Revolutionary War, more than any other war up until recently, has been the most bloody war we've fought. I think another parallel is that in some ways the Revolutionary War could have been avoided. It was an unnecessary war.
Had the British Parliament been a little more sensitive to the colonials' really legitimate complaints and requests the war could have been avoided completely, and of course now we would have been a free country now as is Canada and India and Australia, having gotten our independence in a nonviolent way.
I think in many ways the British were very misled in going to war against America and in trying to enforce their will on people who were quite different from them at the time.
Does the catastrophic ex-prez really think the war in Iraq is bloodier than the Vietnam War, the Korean War, World War II, World War I, the Civil War ...?
Note to Jimmy: Canada did not begin to gain independence until 1867. Australia did not receive partial independence as a commonwealth until 1901. India did not gain independence until 1947, and all the Indians who were killed by the British would hardly describe their deaths as "nonviolent."

I once visited Mount Vernon and was stunned to discover a little known vignette about Washington. There is a key in a case near Washington's front door. The key is the very key that opened the gates to the Bastille. LaFayette gave the key to Washington as a gift, because, he said, it rightfully belonged to "the Father of Liberty".
Later, LaFayette himself was so disgusted with the outcome of the horrific French Revolution that he had himself interred in "free soil" shipped to France from America.
Now there was a Frenchman to admire!

I pretty much agree with him, except that the Civil War and WWII were far bloodier.
When I was the in the Marine Corps the Corps was very dependent on the Navy to accomplish this missions.
Everything the Navy did when I was in the military was done with honor and courage.
I think the same is true today.

Jimmy submitted this to the "Global Test" and England objected.
It's an argument that doesn't hold water because the founders obviously considered every option before taking the course of action they did. If this had been an option, I'm sure they'd have tried it (and, in fact, negotiations HAD been tried). And there WAS a vigorous debate about independence in the Continental Congress...the ultimate vote was for war and ultimately independence. Thank God!
GWB made Lafayette an honorary U.S. citizen in August 2002.
What exactly do you agree with him on?
And werent WWI and Vietnam far bloodier? How about Korea?
Plus, Canada, Austraila, New Zealand, et. al. are still not completely sovereign. The Queen is still their Sovereign and legally still holds power, although she chooses not to. The Governor General of Canada still can legally be removed by the Queen and the Queen can still disolve parliament in Canada and Austrailia. The Crown still holds the cards; I guess Jimmy wishes the Crown still held the cards here, too.
