The art of stealing elections (Don't read if you just had breakfast)
Boston Globe ^ | October 20, 2004 | ROBERT KUTTNER

Posted on 10/20/2004 4:07:28 AM PDT by Semper Paratus

THE REPUBLICANS are out to steal the 2004 election -- before, during, and after Election Day. Before Election Day, they are employing such dirty tricks as improper purges of voter rolls, use of dummy registration groups that tear up Democratic registrations, and the suppression of Democratic efforts to sign up voters, especially blacks and students. ADVERTISEMENT

On Election Day, Republicans will attempt to intimidate minority voters by having poll watchers threaten criminal prosecution if something is technically amiss with their ID, and they will again use technical mishaps to partisan advantage.

But the most serious assault on democracy itself is likely to come after Election Day.

Here is a flat prediction: If neither candidate wins decisively, the Bush campaign will contrive enough court challenges in enough states so that we won't know the winner election night.

The right stumbled on a gambit in 2000, which could become standard operating procedure in close elections: If the election ends up in the courts, all courts eventually lead to the Supreme Court, which, as we learned, can overrule state courts -- and pick the president.

This year is even more ripe for abuse, because the 2002 Help America Vote Act, a "reform" written substantially to Republican specifications, toughened ID requirements. It also gave voters a right to cast "provisional" ballots if their names are missing from the rolls. Good impulse, but someone, ultimately a court, must decide whether they should have been permitted to vote, and that's almost impossible to resolve on Election Day.

That "ID" thing is such a "nuisance". Thank goodness I live in Florida, where we have Represenatives like Carrie Meeks to "fight" for me when I go to vote !!!

I don't have to have any "state issued or recognized ID" !!

I can just pull up to the polling place in my "Escalade", and show them my "light bill".

Boy am I glad when I paid my FPL deposit to get it "cut on", that I only used my first and middle initial THEN my last name, so anyone who wants to use it at another precinct, can say they are being "disfrancized" because their name is not on the list of registered voters there, and fill out one of them "provincial" ballot thingees, just pick a first and middle name for the initials.

ONE "light bill" can "generate" a lotta votes, thanks to good people like Carrie Meeks "looking out" for people like me !!!

Dem charges are only that- charges. Daily the press reportsreal ongoing Dem fraud all over the country. Republican fraud consists of allegations by Dems with no demonstration that anything has actually occurred.

This is fine, publish more articles like this! It only serves to inform people about how baseless the accusations of "disenfranchisement" and "intimidation" of minorities are. Meanwhile, hopefully, the average guy will start thinking more about the fact that he's the one being disenfranchised by the voter fraud that's perpetuated by wide-open voting.

What is sad/frightening/remarkable is that this "column" is actually printed (and intended to be taken seriously!) by the Mainstream media....

But a factual column by Ann Coulter or a story or movie pointing out Kerry's disgusting behavior and self-proclaimed "atrocities" in Vietnam is decried as "hate-mongering" and "lies" by the same MSM!

Do these people believe this baloney, or is this the most cynical of propaganda? Sometimes it's hard to tell a fool from a liar.

I expect a last-minute "surprise" by the democrats similar to the DUI story that came out the weekend before the 2000 election.

Would suprise me if they just make something up, release it on Sunday 31 or Monday the 1st. In the scramble to fully refute it the word won't get out that it's phony until after the election. It's a win/win for them. If Kerry wins, nothing else matters, if Bush wins they'll print a retraction saying they were misled.

The right won the election and the left went to court expecting Bush to just concede even if it took 5 recounts to make Gore the winner. On the fifth recount Bush should then concede, that is their thinking! This really pisses me off!

Rush made a great point yesterday of how most of the Dems successes come from judicial activism and not from legislative law. The Florida Supreme Court tried to change election law in the middle of the election. The Supreme Court wouldn't let them.

HEY YOU F'N A-HOLES! THE LEGISLATURE MAKES THE LAWS IN THIS LAND. THEY REPRESENT THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE!

You can always know why they are up to by what they accuse the GOP of doing.

My point exactly. I heard about the pools of lawyers who are going to contest, but it was on the democrat side. Not the GOP. These people are scum.

Just like the draft issue. Democrats introduce a draft bill, but the GOP is being accused of it. Typical.

It is not surprising that there are "reporters" willing to write such bigoted swill for a newspaper. The pathetic aspect is that there are "major" newspapers whose editors will publish such swill.

Articles like this, "editing" like this, is one of the reasons for the difference between the Blue States and the Red States. Feed this garbage to a population long enough and hard enough and at least a majority of them, sadly, should have their politics permanently perverted.

I won't begin to describe the factual inaccuracies in this article about the 2000 election and the litigation (instigated by Al Gore) which followed it. The folks here on FreeRepublic are well aware of those.

Well then why are all the voter fraud articles in the Cleveland Plain Dealer about Dems and organizations that support Dems???? These people have no morals, no conscience and no integrity. They are the ones who will stop at nothing to win, whether it's legal or not; ethical or not.

The 'Rats are so delusional. They will work ever so hard to deprive W of a legitimate victory rather than lose with grace.
