Draft law may bring landlords a jail stay

Toledo City Council is considering an ordinance that could put landlords in jail if their tenants hold too many loud parties.

The proposal, which is tougher than either the Athens, Ohio, or Bowling Green ordinances upon which it is based, is an attempt to crack down on student parties in the residential neighborhoods around the University of Toledo, but would apply citywide.

"This ordinance addresses the egregious examples of parties and gatherings that are literally out of control," District 5 Councilman Ellen Grachek said. Co-sponsoring the measure are District 1 Councilman Wilma Brown and at-large Councilman George Sarantou.

A landlords' association says the ordinance holds them responsible for behavior they can't control. And, they said, it could impel a landlord to try to personally break up a party if the police don't do it.

I am not allowed to evict a tenant for having a party.

Is it possible in MD to have your rental/lease agreements prohibit "disturbances" or other criminal activity? I think you could lawfully evict or refuse to renew the lease under a lease violation. Or does it go beyond that?

Clink the link. It's not a list, it's the current champion (the AP).

"What's a "propasal"?"

A sub-species of a "tenet"?

As in, "Is that red-bellied tenet? No, that's a pink propasal."

I think.

Copy and paste are your friends. In the first place, this is not the headline from the story. That's frowned upon here, and leads to duplicate posts. In the second place, you misspelled two words, making the headline confusing at best, as I'm sure you've seen already.

This could have been easily solved by copying the actual headline and pasting into the posting form.

If they keep it up, there won't BE any rental housing, so people who can't afford to buy will simply have to live in their cars or on the street. The law of unintended consequences . . .

"everbody's a english major around here. what do expect from a Florida education anyway.."

Actually, they're not. I was. If all you have to do is copy and paste, then it's so simple to avoid this type of error, while avoiding ridicule, unnecessary duplicate posts, and the wrath of the Admin Moderator, something awesome to behold, indeed.

Good catch. I can't believe I missed it.

This freeper is an active poster of stories. I'm just trying to help him not make such mistakes in the future.

The law of unintended consequences . . .

Exactly. Just like rent control = housing shortage.

Um...........wouldn't this lead to landlords screening potential tenants more vigourously and thereby precipitating lawsuits for discrimnation? I'm from Toledo and moved in 1975. They certainly haven't gotten any brighter.

Do they even know the difference between an alligator and a crocodile in Florida?

Yes we do, but the Yankees are more dangerous.

Will the police have the choice to just go after the land lord or will they still be required to cite the tenant?

Citing is paperwork. It isn't the same as breaking up.

Amazing!!! Once again gov.org does something that is unbelievable. They through you in jail if you are picky about who you let live in your property and then throw you in jail again for the damage the tenants they forced you to lease to do to your property.

I thought it sounded like the brand name of one of those new drugs for conditions we don't really want to specify, "Take Propasal for what ails you!"

This probably all started when the colleges and universities instituted their "no drinking on campus" policies.
