The crash could have been a lot worse.

Agreed.

For those unfamiliar, this was just east of downtown Atlanta, and is densely populated and usually full of traffic. It could have very easily become much nastier.

Since I haven't watched much local news since I got satellite, who was the Channel 2 reporterette in the belly girl type tight shirt and baseball cap?

That's why those little planes scare me more. The disintegration part.

And big planes do what????

The lack of knowledge among the public about General Aviation is just astounding.

The fact is many small aircraft crashes don't kill anyone. While if you hit the ground in an airliner (granted, a less likley thing), you're almost certianly dead.

I flew a Baron just like this one across the country a few years ago. The pilot of that same airplane crashed it a few months later (screwed up and shut off both engines at once). He landed in a "badland" area of deep gullies and hills. Very steep. Plane bounced off one hilltop, and landed on another, sliding to a stop at the bottom of the hill. Both occupants got out and walked away unhurt.

That's what I'm thinking. He saw the line and perhaps didn't inflate the deicers thinking he'd just climb out. Hope that's not the case, but since most GA accidents involve some degree of pilot error, I don't think it's inappropriate to speculate such.

Indeed it is sad. :-(
A Baron crashed in Ft Collins a few weeks ago.

I had a Baron for 10 years, now a 310.

I have been in both, but I prefer the Piper Aztec myself.

The Timing of this is suspicious!

It's George W. Bush's Fault!

John Edwards and John Kerry have a plan to make certain there are no more plane crashes!

My experience is limited to a few stories... the most recent one being the Miramar Air Show this weekend. A civilian pilot hit the ground in his plane and the plane broke apart on impact. Call me ignorant... you're braver than I.

Yeah, sounds like an isolated incident.

But when I first read it was headed for Venice, little signal lights went off in my head, because if I remember right, a couple of the highjackers if 9/11 were based in Venice, FL.

The crash could have been a lot worse.

Just because it's a "plane" doesn't mean there's some kind of mass destruction. Size does matter. Small aircraft crashes rarely kill anyone on the ground, even in a city.

A fast twin like this one crashed off the end of Orange County airport into Balboa Penensula in Southern Californa a few years ago. A VERY high density living area. Not a soul on the ground was killed. Plane crashed into a tennis court, and didn't even depart the boundaries of it.

A truck leaving the highway in the city would be a much worse accident.

was anyone on board the plane? [Uh, it didn't take off from the airport without a pilot, did it?]
Actually, I remember a news story about that happening once.

Hit the ground while doing aerobatics. That will do you in for sure.

I don't do aerobatics at all. Much less at low altitude like the airshow guy.

I took flying lessons about five years ago to overcome the fear of flying.

My instructor was aware of my anxiety beforehand, so on my first lesson, after climbing to about 3500ft he pulled the power back to idle and let the nose dip forward. He then set the 'best glide' trim and we drifted for awhile as he basically said, "Don't worry about it, we can land in any of these fields if we have to and walk away" (this was in central Texas).

For all of the turbulence, I have no fear of prop planes now, but am still a little anxious about the big jets. If only I had the money to go to flight school.... :)

A decent sized plane capable of carrying several people costs a hell of a lot more than a Ryder truck deposit.

Huh? I don't think so - but I could be wrong...
