VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- An official at the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith said a California canon lawyer seeking a formal decree of heresy against Sen. John F. Kerry of Massachusetts, Democratic presidential nominee, has misrepresented his contact with the Vatican office.
"The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith has had no contact with Mr. (Marc) Balestrieri," said Dominican Father Augustine DiNoia, undersecretary of the congregation.
"His claim that the private letter he received from (Dominican) Father Basil Cole is a Vatican response is completely without merit," Father DiNoia told Catholic News Service Oct. 19, declining to discuss the matter further.

Yes indeed!
The folks at new advent have done a tremendous job. A true gift to the Church.

Right on Howlin! As always.
A poster on a related thread mentioned something about the Vatican bureaucracy not letting this much truth come out on kerry the heretic.
It was nice while it lasted to think the Vatican would put principle before politics.

Pope Pius XI "Those who hold the reins of government should not forget that it is the duty of public authority ... to defend the lives of the innocent ... among whom we must mention in the first place infants hidden in the mother's womb. And if the public magistrates ... do not defend them, but by their laws and ordinances betray them to death at the hands of doctors and others, let them remember that God is the Judge and Avenger of innocent blood which cries from earth to heaven" (Casti Connubii No. 67 - 31/12/1930). Man, that's refreshing.

It's the duty of the bishop to inform, warn, and admonish the "Catholic" in question that he or she is in error on this grave matter. One could imagine this being done privately at first (notification). If the person failed to recant and repent, then it would seem to follow according to the ministrations of prudence that a public warning and admonishment should follow along with a certain amount of stated time suggested for recanting. If the offending party still persisted obstinately in the grave sin of promoting abortion, infanticide, and the genocidal slaughter of embryos for stemm cells, it would seem to follow that more emphatic punitive measures should be applied. Since the sin is public, so should the penalties be.
Since the sin in question involves grave matter, the loss of life, the additional sin of murder (on a mass scale in this case), grave scandal, and injury to the faith and the faithful, we are dealing with a very severe degree of grave matter indeed.
What could we say about a bishop or pastor who lacked the courage and fortitude to defend innocent life, to protect the church from scandal, and to protect future young women and the innocent unborn from the horror and trauma of these crimes? What will future church historians say about these bishops and pastors?

From what I've been told, the Vatican leaves these things up to the local ordinary to decide. In this case it woould be Archbishop O'Malley who would have to excommunicate him.

the Church in the US is not going to risk its tax exempt status. Nor should it, IMO.It was the last Secretary of State who once asked, "What's the point of having this superb military that you're always talking about if we can't use it?"
If tax exemption is dampening the Church's ardor for her mission, she should flee it like death.

"Any efforts to excommunicate Guiliani? Or does this only apply when a Democrat Catholic runs for President [Republicans have never nominated a Catholic]?
I would be happy if this were applied to all public figures, including Republicans, pundits, teachers and honorary degree recipients at Catholic Colleges. Right now it smell more of politics than morality and will disappear right after the election.

The spokesman for the Vatican in the news story below) is a Dominican priest.

Contrast the above with this:
Communist agents have infiltrated the Catholic hierarchy
Albert Vassart, a former member of the French communist party, revealed in 1955 that Moscow had issued a 1936 order that carefully selected members of communist youth to enter seminaries and, after training, receive ordination as priests. Some of these were to infiltrate religious orders, particularly the Dominicans (In his essay, "Satan at Work," the great Catholic philosopher Dietrich von Hildebrand reported that the French Dominicans had become so communistic in their "evangelization" that in 1953, the Order barely escaped dissolution by the order of Pope Pius XII.)

Better attack Kerry on real issues. False attacks do the cause no good. While I agree there are many things to attack Kerry on this is hardly a false attack.

"Just because he's not excommunicated doesn't mean he's in good standing in the Catholic Church." Um... yes it does.
