Don't know why you asked a question about an election that took place back when ice covered the Earth. But during that election, I was General Counsel to Gene McCarthy, who was running as an independent. If we had gotten Gene on just a few more state ballots, most importantly New York, we could have drawn enough votes to cost Carter a few states and get Jerry Ford elected.
How's that for arcane behavior in 19 and 76?

I wonder - maybe it's better that you DIDN'T get Gene on more ballots. Without Carter, would we ever have had Reagan?
BTW, I was a high school sophomore during the 76 election. I wasn't as politically attuned as I am now, but I clearly remember my electronics teacher spending a couple weeks in a funk after the election. "America is going to regret electing that peanut farmer", he'd mumble.
